Ammo through Canada

How much ammo can I transport through Canada (by car) to Alaska?

Are there any restrictions on caliber, etc?

I've done the research on transporting firearms (8 of my 13 have to be shipped ), but I can't find the details about transporting ammo.

I sure hope I don't have to sell 2000 rounds of ammo (none of which is rimfire). I suppose I could ship it, but it's probably 50 lbs of ammo.

best way to find out is contact Alaskan authorities. Alaska is pretty pro-gun, so I'll bet the local authorities would be willing to help. Maybe even call the PD where you're going to be moving in. It wouldn't hurt to establish early that you obey the laws. Then again, I'm sure others will say telling the PD that you own a lot of guns is a bad thing - it's a personal call I guess.

Call Canadian authorities too... can't hurt to ask. I'll bet they have protocols established for people driving through to Alaska.

Go here. Despite the fact you're just passing through, you'll still be considered to be importing ammo. Two thousand rounds isn't a big deal, but you'll have to declare it at Customs.

You CANNOT bring ANY firearm into Canada without the Canadian paperwork. Even when just passing through. Moving truck drivers have been arrested and charged with 'possession of unregistered firearms' when clients put firearms into trunks etc and sent them as part of the load without telling the shipper. The driver didn't know there were any firearms on his truck. No excuse.
Go here for the 'Visitor's to Canada' firearm importing rules. It's going to cost you $25 Cdn. to bring your firearms through Canada. Don't even think about carrying a handgun while driving through. You'll be arrested, charged and likely turned over to the U.S. Homeland Security types.
