It would appear that I'm going to be PCS'ing to Alaska in the near future and have been trying to figure out the mechanics of getting my assorted firearms there. I'm going to be driving up on the Alcan and am trying to figure out what I can and cannot legally transport through Canada on a Form 909/910.

I was wondering if Canadian list members, or anyone else who is in the know on the topic, could help provide some information on the topic. Specifically, I'm concerned with the legality of transporting any of the following through Canada:

  • AR-15 w. 16" barrel
  • AK-47 and AK-74 (I think these are right out)
  • FAL
  • Para-FAL w. 16.25" barrel
  • Sig 556
  • Any restriction on transporting stripper or assembled AR-15 lowers?

From what I've read, I think I need to ship high cap magazines seperately.

Any information appreciated.

I do not recommend it. I went back and forth to fairbanks via the alcan. Customs guy did not care if I was carrying a NUKE, all he kept asking was "Are you sure you have no guns???" My truck is loaded to the brim with a safe, ammo and my other stuff but no guns. I had my FFL ship to me after I got there.

You need to check Canadian Customs website and contact the Embassy or Consulate for the most accurate info. Based on those firearms you listed I'd say Canada will tell you you have to ship those to Alaska.

Your entire list is comprised of firearms classified as restricted or prohibited in Canada, just like handguns (or worse). You would be much better-advised to ship them separately by common-carrier to their destination.

The panda.com site is very-well researched, excellent reference detail.

As long as the long guns and the magazines are not loaded, you can mail them to yourself.

If you do plan to ship them in that manner, it would not be unwise to check with your local post office to make sure they know what the rules are, and get the name of a contact person for when you show up with your packages.

AR-15 w. 16" barrel restricted
AK-47 and AK-74 (I think these are right out) prohibited
FAL prohibited
Para-FAL w. 16.25" barrel prohibited
Sig 556 prohibited
Any restriction on transporting stripper or assembled AR-15 lowers? still treated the same as a firearm

I'm fairly positive that anything prohibited cannot enter the country, just like we can't bring in <16" barreled rifles, norinco etc.

The AR15 can be brought up as its only a restricted class firearm, but no hunting with it or plinking, range use only just like handguns. The para-fal, guessings its a fal varient is also prohib.
