What do you do with ammo you no longer have a need for?
I have a few boxes of .380 for a pistol my wife sold, and other than being a book end on my shooting shelf, it's useless to me.

What do you all do with un-needed ammo?

Trade it away. I've even given it away to friends, who have returned the favor with other goodies. Got some nice holsters that way.

Good question. I'm getting ready to move x-country and the movers won't transport ammo. That leaves me with some 6k rounds of various calibers that I either have to transport myself or get rid of. Obviously, I wouldn't get rid of all of it, only pare it down to a manageable level, but that still means figuring out what to do with 90% of it.

Gave it to a buddy I'd helped to buy his first pistol. Turned out the one he chose used ammo I had lying around, so he got 150 rounds to learn with.

So far I like AirForceShooters' idea.

Take it to the range and GIVE it to the youngest shooter there that needs it.

Good idea man, I'm always willing to help the younger shooters, especially ones that can not afford as much ammo as they need to practice.

Thank you, some young (or new) shooter will get 300 rounds of .380 and I'll introduce them to THR at that time also.

Thanks.

you need the ammo because it's an excuse to buy another gun.

I second the giving it to a kid. Otherwise some gunshops and I have heard of police departments will destroy it for you. Call your local PD and ask if they know anything about what to do with it.

devnull,
Box it up and ship it to yourself. Last time I checked ammunitionis not evena hazmat for shipping, just powder and primers.

Or post your location/number of rds/type and price. Odds are there is someone here close enough that will take it off your hands if cheap enough.

I've got hundreds and hundreds of (junk??) rounds

I never could pass up a deal on old amo. Bought a thousand surplus rounds for an old 7mm Remington rolling block that I haven't shot in 25 years. Most of the amo is starting to show rust spots on the casings. Got a great deal on some surplus Checz 9mm that still had the commie star on the casing. The stuff rusts your gun so fast you almost have to clean it after every shot.. But I got a good deal on it  I have got some 30 year old 30-30 amo that I loaded up back in the 70s. I have also got some WW1 06 ammo. and etc. etc. etc. Anyway, to make a long story short, most of it is so old that I don't trust it anymore. I didn't get smart about storing ammo till the last few years. What do I do with it. If I tried to dispose of it the proper way at a disposal site, the local john law would probably arrest me for being some kind of survivalest. :D I would donate it to the local gun club but I don't actually think they would want it.

brickeyee, I was wondering about that myself. Think I'll go have a talk with my friendly not-so-neighborhood (as in, it's a good halfhour drive) gun store to see if they'd be willing to sit on the stuff a week or so and then send it when I call. At my expense, of course.

Buy another gun ;-)

I thought that was the first rule of firearms ownership...Thou Shalt Not Sell...except to me, at a good price.

I have a couple hundred rounds of .38 special, I don't have a .38 special. I am saving to buy one.

Dev;

I don't know your circumstances, but 6K isn't really all that much space wise. Just pack it up & take it with you. Speaking from experience, I moved something like 20K just a few years ago. No big deal, just do it.

It's not just the space -- it almost fits in the footlocker I bought when the safe got too crowded to keep both the guns and the ammo in it -- it's also the weight. I'll be driving from DC to Austin with a fully laden coupe, and taking this much ammo besides isn't really feasible.

Unless some of the DC area folks would like to buy some ammo, cheap... :D

I never get rid of ammo even long after the gun is gone. I have...
Several different boxes of 9mm form when I carried a P11.
Several boxes of 32 from when I carried a P32.
A few boxes of 380 from my 380 fetish.
A couple hundred rounds of 7tcu in various loadings from the contender barrel that I just couldn't get to shoot.
About 100 rds of 30-30AI from the contender barrel I should have never gotten rid of.
2 boxes of 28ga shells from when I was useing those useless "little skeeter" bore reducers.
One box of 416 rem that got purchased accidently for dad's rigby.
4 boxes of 17hmr that I bought the day I was going to buy a 17 rifle, but spotted another 311 while they were running my paperwork.
And then tons of odds and ends that have just popped up from time to time.

I swapped several boxes of .45-70's and .223 Wolf Commie junk for some 9mm and .357 mag ammo at my local gun shop.

I've got a few boxes of Winchester white box .223 that I don't exactly know what to do with...

Guess I need an AR. :D
