I have a large number of animals that hate loud noise. I have neighbors who are worse with loud noise. As a result my rodent control is stuck to CB Caps and 22 subsonic stuff.

I am just sick of having to clean my rifle every few shots. And although the makers claim these low powered bullets dont blow through the animal, every time i shoot a rodent i have to make sure i have a big pile of dirt or stump behind to catch the bullet, otherwise i get to hear the bullet smack through the backyard trees for a hundred yards.
IS there a source for 22lr ammo, standard velocity and subsonic loads that are CLEAN burning?

The .17 HMR and .17 Mach II are good for predator control and pest control. I know the hollow points are great at killing coyotes and not blowing the hide to shreds. But is there a
low velocity subsonic type round that goes, around 800 fps or so, thats accurate and powerful enough to kill a raccoon or woodchuck at 20-25 yards. But WEAK enough that shooting a chipmunk or squirrel at that range wont create a table sized spot of blood and guts surrounding a single front leg and a piece of tail? Hollow point?

Im just really really in need of some help everyone.

high end pellet gun???

btw, i routinely hunt squirrel at that range with std velocity 22 lr's with the lead bullets (no hp's) and have no problems with destroying them as you speak of.

Try an air rifle; I think I saw a Gamo rifle recently in American Rifleman that had a supressor on the muzzle if you're concerned about noise.

You can't get much cleaner and cheaper for ammo than an air rifle. I think low end spring piston ones can be found starting for about $100.00.

I bought my kid one of those for Christmas. It's a nice air rifle but I can't figure out what the suppressor is really for. It's no more quiet than the other airguns we have.

the 22 stuff just blows through everything, im trying to see if there is a subsonic style .17 that wont blow through, or create a huge puddle of blood when i shoot a squirrel or chipmunk.

No, there isn't anything like that in .17 caliber, except .177 air rifles..

The Aguila Colibri .22 CB Caps are the least powerful and quietest thing there is in rimfire ammo.

(Not to be confused with Aguila Super-Colibri which contains a small amount of powder & are much louder)

CCI CB Caps also contain powder, and are almost as load as standard velocity .22 Shorts.

You may want to try a rifle with a longer bbl. with cb's. The extra bbl. length will slow down the bullet before it exits the bbl. and will quiet the noise.

Crosman 2100 - 10 pumps - 725 fps

http://crosman.com/site/listing/1040

Slaying squirrels and pigeons since 1975.

They changed the model number (formerly the model 766) in recent years.
But its the same gun they've been making since the 70's.

Thirty years of building the same air rifle, they can't be wrong.

The seals on my 70's era rifle finally gave out. So, plan on replacing it every 20 years or so.

Get a Sheridan pump, been using one of the original Silverstreaks for years for pest control, very accurate, number of pumps determins your velocity for the distance and type of target, had a woodpecker get inside my gun room a couple months ago, originally thought he was outside the house so had 5 pumps in it, realized he was inside so fired the pellet into the ground outside, re pumped with 2 pumps took him out as he perched ontop of a NO1MK3 Enfield without the pellet leaving his body risking one of my guns being hit...

Have used the same pellet rifle to take out ground squirles At 100 yards with 8 pumps, haven't tried any of the newer Benjamins in .177 or .22 cal mines the original .20 cal

If noise is an issue ya definetly do not want a .17 HMR the combination of a small bore and hot load make for a gun thats louder than a .22 mag several times over.

Colibri you can barely here 5 ft away if shot from a rifle. They have little to no noise. Make sure you get the ones that look like pyramids on a 22lr casing. They should Not look like regular 22 ammo.

It's kinda a tall order to have something quiet that won't tear up chipmunks, but will also drop a chuck or a coyote. A suppressor would make life easier, but a tube fed bolt or lever action 22lr rifle with a 20" barrel firing 22 shorts is very quiet, and is effective against most anthing under a pound at up to 50 yards. For chucks, the shorts are a little light, and definitely too light for coyotes, but you can load up some mini mags or stinger HPs. As far as safely dispatching coyotes, I would say 22mag or 22hornet are a minimum, I have had fairly dismal results with rimfire 17s on most anything bigger than a squirrel I have shot with them. perhaps a crossbow might be an option, out to about 50 yards a broadhead tipped bolt does enough damage to drop a deer, and they are qauiter than even a good pellet gun.

i would say try either 22 longs, or Aguila colibris, or super colibris, but you need to do two things; first, test them out for accuracy at 25 yds, a lot of dudes rifles will not shoot these well, secondly , if you try the colibris, shoot one out of a bolt action ONLY, then open it up and check down the bbl, to make sure it has actually come out!!!! I have seen some not make it out of a 22 inch bbl, the super colibris and longs, will for sure though.
Otherwise, it is pellet time, single cock, spring piston, with good sites, or airrifle rated scope, fixed 4x, 1000-fps, will do the job out to 20 yds.
