Major [George W.] Schofield of the 10th Cavalry was a perfect gentleman, but the penny was his god. At one payday while I was orderly for him, I had the pleasure to walk about ten or fifteen times to the different offices, all for thirty-five cents [extra pay]. As major of the fort he had nothing at all to do so he passed his time by experimenting in the improvement on pistols of which he had an interest. [Schofield perfected the automatic ejector for the Smith & Wesson .45 caliber pistol]. Once while at Caddo this same major engaged a negro woman for his servant, brought her up to [Fort] Sill on government transportation and, it was said, made her work for two months free for her fare.
