Since we've had a couple of hypothetical discussions on this, I thought you all might find this relevant. They don't always turn and run. I know nothing more about this then what's posted here.

Suspect In City Shoot-out In Custody December 20, 2003 Suspect Tracked Down After Receiving Medical Aid A suspect in a shootout with off-duty St. Louis police officers during a robbery Tuesday is in custody. Investigators tracked down Travon Coleman through medical aid he received in Granite City. The 21-year-old is charged with robbery, assault upon a police officer and armed criminal action. Police say Coleman and a 16-year-old wore masks and carried pistols as they entered a gas station mini mart. An off-duty officer who was a customer inside the store identified himself and drew his pistol. Police say Coleman was wounded in an exchange with the officer and store manager, who also grabbed a gun. The robbers fled from the store and traded more shots with another off-duty officer. The 16-year-old suspect was arrested earlier this week.

Sounds like a wild and wooly one. 5 parties, 5 guns, bullets flying back and forth 3 different ways, and one wounded.

Strikes me there is a category of BG .. and not necessarily old either ..... who has either a simple ''attitude'' problem and/or ....... is in the ''nothing to lose'' camp. This type here it would seem.

For them .. if it comes to shooting (and quite likely these types of BG very likely WILL shoot people even if they've gotten what they want) .... they'll just blast away at anyone and everyone who may try and stop them, until either they shoot there way out or are badly enough injured (Platt and Matix types come to mind).

Surprising here only one injured.

Probably best to assume that should that ''in extremis'' situation ever happen to any of us .... that this may well have to be the way to go ....... which means that practice and shot placement of utmost importance.

Just goes to show you, even police officers, unless your life, or the life of your loved ones are being threatened, let the jerks have the cash. Be a GOOD witness. If push comes to shove, then you act.

The whole idea of "identifying yourself" or telling the robber to drop it is moronic. Assess the situation....number of goblins...position of store clerk, etc. If you have a shot, take it...finish the job. If not, be a good witness. There have been some very good discussioins on here about this topic. It's not a simple scenario. Happy trails.
