My father purchased his first rifle at age 13 through the mail form Ward's. His father did not have to have a driver's license or insurance to drive, and never had taxes withheld from his income.
We are definitely less free than we were a hundred years ago, but we are physically so much better off that the average person, who doesn't really care about freedom all that much, considers it a fair trade.
Even in early 1960s most houses did not have air conditioning, or dishwashers, or color televisions. When I went to college in 1974 freshman were not even allowed to have cars, and most did not have any kind of a stereo.
