H&H Hunter of our staff has started an excellent thread in the Hunting subforum about surviving attacks from bears and big cats. People who do not hunt, but who hike, camp, etc, should benefit from it, and I am linking it here.

As in our other ST&T discussions, mindset and skillset are key.

Watch the video, at least once.

The next time you think about posting in one of the "what do you carry in the woods" threads, consider why you are carrying whatever it is.

Good video and I read a little of the thread, seems like folks are having a good discussion.

But since you've started another here I'll just say that most everyone on the web likes to talk a good game about possible bear encounters on the web. What gun they'd use or what they would do.

Ever since I saw the movie The Revenant with the bear attack scene its stuck with me. I know folks like to say Hollywood is overdramatic but I truly feel this hits the nail on the head with what a bad scenario with a bear run in would be like.

Its not super graphic but if you're squeamish maybe don't watch.

Its interesting that what happens in the scene is very similar to what the guy in the OP's video describes as far multiple bites and being tossed around like a rag doll. Also how quickly you can be surprised.

My personal opinion on the subject is fairly modest I would say. If you're aware of a bear ahead of time (off in the distance) do your best to extract yourself from the area ASAP. As is seen in the OP's video that doesn't always work. If you are confronted with no other options fight like hell.
