Back when Mr. Lapin posted an interview with Louis Awerbuck, the topic of hunting came up, illustrating parallels between hunting and defense. I’ve been thinking about this ever since. I recently began to expand on the idea that the practice of hunting hones many similar skills that defense training does.

This goes beyond the firearms use in a lot of ways. Obviously, knowing your hardware and delivering its potential, is important. But as you know, mindset comes first, and this, I believe, is very true for hunting, especially big game hunting.

Let me first say that sitting in an elevated wood box, overlooking a bucket of corn isn’t really what I’m talking about here. The type of hunting that consumes me, more than any other, is back-country elk hunting. Painfully early hours, hiking in the dark, uphill, for miles on end, and carrying all your gear with you, works against your wits when you eventually arrive at the spot where you need the sharpest of senses. I’ve been doing that for several years now; many times each year, and it is a mental test unlike anything else I know. Except maybe for in-depth defensive training.

Before you read into this, that deer hunting is better, or could substitute a good defensive training course, it’s not, and it won’t. Hunting an animal isn’t going to provide you will all the information that an intensive self-defense program could.

I thought it would be a good idea to throw this out to you guys who hunt, and see if you know of any those hunting tactics that tend to sharpen your defensive skills as well. I don't have experience with every type of hunting, such as goose hunting for example. So I can't tell you what, if anything, it could benefit to the defensive mindest or skillset. Therefore, I call upon those of you who might have this wisdom that you could pass along to others.

Where do you see parallels?
