Anyone know of any shooting culture in Ann Arbor, Michigan? I'm here for the summer and wondered about ranges, LGS, potential shooting buddies, or any local quirky gun laws to be aware of (as far as I know, my VA CCW permit is valid here).

You should be able to find some good ranges with in 30 minutes of AA. Michigan is full of quirky gun laws, but we have statewide pre-emption so you're good on that.

Your biggest problem is that U of M is one of 3 schools that have a special status in MI. This status allows them to make their own on-campus gun laws. Pre-emption does not affect this. U of M is so inter-twined with AA that you are going to have to be careful of where the campus is.

Generally in MI you can carry on campus, but not in any building where classes are taught or where students live. I think U of M bans all firearms on campus.

Thanks for the info Unistat! That's what I'd heard about U of M as well. I suspect that I won't really be able to carry effectively here in AA, which just feels so unnatural, but not a lot that can be done about it. I'll have to look into the ranges. Thanks again.

Thanks, Kaeto. I'll look into how difficult it will be to get there (my transportation options are limited while I'm here over the summer so I may just have to postpone shooting until August).

If you find yourself in the market for a firearm or just want to vist a gunshop go N about 35 mi to Fenton, MI--GUNS GALORE..

The have good prices. They get kicked around cause the like to SELL guns. They dont have good customer relations regarding someone who wants to shop and handle a dozen guns. I believe they work on commission, to explain it differently.

If you want to buy-cant beat em-except you are probably out of state and handguns would have to fo FFL to FFL. Might still be a good deal.

Introduce yourself over on the Michigan Gun Owners http://www.migunowners.org/forum/index.php? or Michigan Gun Forum http://www.migunforums.com/ (or both) and I'm sure that you will find plenty of company for your stay. Enjoy.

i introduced myself there, and wouldn't suggest you bother with that site. i haven't logged into it in a year or so. it's basically small group of people that start arguments with eachother and you on every single thread. lol

they also like to cause drama by OC'ing where it's not allowed, make a stink in businesses that have signs disallowing it, etc. they seem to not understand the concept of liability and safety.

the people on that forum make gun owners look bad and my friends stopped frequenting it as well.

as far as gunshops, i really don't know what the cheapest ones are near ann arbor. i went to guns galore, and not only were they pricey, but their employees were kinda rude, and a little weird lol

firing line in westland near canton can have some great deals, especially on used guns. bought a few from them. not a far drive from san franarbor either. they're not always the warmest people, but they're prices are worth it lol

Well, that is certainly one opinion.

-What I see over at MGO is OC'ers making various institutions aware the OC is legal in Michigan.
-A group of folks that let businesses know that "no guns allowed" signs don't stop criminals and they will no longer be spending money in those establishments.
-A lot of trolls that like to start arguments. What gun forum doesn't have them? THR has mods that shut garbage down right away, other forums let it go a little longer.

I'm going out on a limb here, Buzzcat?

Regardless, it is a good source of information concerning the specifics of gun ownership in Michigan with several lawyers active on the forum that will answer some general legal questions.

I no longer post over there because nearly EVERY opinion evolves into an argument. I do go there to find out what's going on and who's doing good for our 2A. Open Carry and politics however seem to be all that goes on there besides the classifieds. I've been a member there for over three years and it just isn't fun any more. Hope that you've found someone to shoot with and a good gun shop though. God bless the USA and God bless you.

Lot's of ranges within a reasonable distance of Ann Arbor. The Tri County Sportsman's League is in Saline just South of AA. They even do IDPA. There's an indoor range in Dexter, but they make you either use their ammo (which is reasonably priced), or bring Winchester WinClean of your own. Then there's a great range in Livonia called Firearm Exchange, and another in Westland called Firing Line. I think there's one up in Brighton too. Oh, and Island Lake Rec. area has an outdoor range too. The furthest one of those is probably 25 miles.

Cabela's, straight down 23 probably has the best prices on guns and ammo in the area.

Well, apparently it's not just one opinion.

Nope, I'm not buzzcat.

And OCing where there's already a sign prohibiting it clearly Indicates that business already knows it's legal ;)

Thanks for all the tips. My options are pretty limited I reckon as I left my car in VA (I'm only here 8 weeks so I was trying to keep things simple) but I do appreciate all the advice. I loved the San Franarbor bit :D... it does have that atmosphere. It's been fun to visit, but I wouldn't plan to move here permanently.

I take it back, after the last few day thinking about this and that last few responses to my posts, I'm really beginning to agree with you. I don't like to start agruments, but I do defend my points. When it devolves to personal attacks (I admit, I will go there) I drop it for the most part.

I really think MGO could be better with a little more activity from the mods.

If you get the chance, Top Gun Shooting Sports in Taylor is worth a visit. Nice indoor range, helpful/knowledgeable staff and rent guns to boot. They will even rent you a full auto!
