This time I went prepared. I knew it was going to be hot so I pulled out all my tools to stay cool. I started by drinking plenty of water at about 6 a.m. with the match starting at 9. I used salt tablets and electrolytes in my water.

I brought 4 bottles of Gatorade and 4 more of water with pack of electrolytes in my bag.

Shooting started and it was 103. I did pretty well on the first stage but then had to shoot Outer Limits. That's not my best stage and I proved it again.

My next two stages were sub-par and there's a long walk from that to the next stage. Last match I almost didn't make it but forced myself through the pain. Today, I was hydrated enough and made the long walk with no troubles.

My next three stages were above average and last stage, where I'm normally ready to quit, was my best Smoke & Hope in a long time. When I'm shooting in the 2's it's a good run.

I used a cooling vest, three chilly neck clothes, a hat with a fan built in and a skull cap drenched in ice water to get me through the day and it worked quite well. I had no troubles getting back in the car or driving home.

Sounds like you had the right gear for sure. 113 is punishing even if it’s a “dry heat”. At least your evap cooling gear works. You can get burned by a hot steel black gun when it’s that hot and the gun sits in the sun for very long.

On the hot days, I bring an EZ up canopy with me. It’s never very hard to find 3 others to help carry it from stage to stage.

Also helps shorten your day because everyone is standing right in front of the targets they need to be taping/resetting/painting.

Getting the sun off is a pretty big deal. Even the dumb cows were in the shade yesterday.

I'm wanting to try steel challenge this year, but I'm delaying until September in the hope of cooler weather. I'd be hard pressed to spend the day in heat like that!

Heat is finally starting to wear me out faster than it used to. Im getting to the point where shooting when its 90 or above is a no go. I am glad to see you were prepared and able to keep going out there .

I spend a week in Needles on the river every July. Even with two AC units on the trailer it can sometimes not cool down enough.

It was all of 132 this day!
