I finally finished my box of Winchester Xpert Hollow Point rounds (500 for $5 at wally-world) and can get 4/5 shots on a 1" round shoot-n-see at 50 yds (after 3 it gets hard to see without scope :( ). My friend keeps telling me to get some better ammo but there quite a few to choose from. I am quite budget limited so buying a variety to see how each will do is probably not the best route so I was hoping you guys could narrow it down to 2-3 choices

With this rifle I will always be shooting between 25-50 yds...

any single boxes you can find from Aguila, eley, golden eagle, remington orange box, remington yellow box. All of the above are eley variants, made in diff parts of the world. Eley is , without a doubt , the finest rimfire ammo available. If you ever read an article on how they make their ammo, you would be stunned as to the level of their testing with scanners, lasers, electromagnetics, all througout the process.
Try federal bulk pacs, stay away from cci or remington bulk pacs. They are usually stinky, dirty, and very inconsistent, with many duds.
Winchester bulk pacs can be very good.
American Eagle red box, made by Federal, is a very cheap, yet surprisingly accurate round inside of 80 yds, simply because of the flatbase design.
CCI standard velocity, or green tag.
Wolf/sk/lapua- all made by the same peeps i believe.

This ammo listed above is pretty much gospel, and works for those of us who throw money around, and those of us who are cheap!!!
The ammo listed above works well, in all levels of rifles, from 100 dollar marlins,
to 1000. dollar Annies.

With open sights, I think you are doing very well. Stick with what you have!

If you want to try other lesser priced ammo, first try the Federal 510's sold in 50 round boxes at Walmart. The CCI ammo is a bit more expensive, but I would try a couple of the 100 round boxes and see how you like it.

In general, standard velocity ammo will shoot more consistantly that high velocity ammo. But you may not be able to tell any difference with open sights.

I would get a rimfire scope and your shooting will likely improve over standard open sights.

Thanks guys :)

I would like to use a scope but I don't want to do that with this rifle and I can't afford another just yet.

If you are cost conscious then stick with the repectable ammo you've got.
It won't hurt to give the Fed bulk a try for about the same price.
I've not heard anything but GOOD experiences with anything CCI.
Good advice was given on avoiding the Rem stuff...dirty & inconsistent!
If you can spend a little more try CCI Mini Mags and or Fed Auto Match. Both available @WW!

Good luck!

WOW, they still on for that? I gotta go look! I shoot the 550 pack Federal Lightening the most. It works. I get an occasional misfire with it, not real well primed, but it works most of the time. I sometimes go through a 550 pack in a trip, usually burn up most of one. Can't afford that with CCI. The stuff is accurate enough and pretty danged good in the 10/22 and my Mark II pistol. I have one pistol with a thin (I guess) firing pin that misfires pretty regular with it and don't skip a beat on CCI, but it works in most of my stuff.
