Gunman opens fire at Calif. quarry; 2 dead

Updated at 11:52 a.m. ET

CUPERTINO, Calif. - A disgruntled employee opened fire at a meeting at a Northern California limestone quarry early Wednesday, killing two people and injuring six others, authorities said.

CBS News station KPIX-TV in San Francisco reports that the employee allegedly arrived at the meeting with an assault rifle and a handgun and started shooting at the quarry owned by Lehigh Southwest Cement Company in Cupertino about 15 miles west of San Jose. The quarry is located about 3 miles from the headquarters for Apple.

The gunman then left the meeting and began walking around the quarry grounds. Santa Clara County Sheriff's spokesman Jose Cardoza said the gunman remains at large.

Police identified the suspect as Shareff Allman, 45, an employee at the quarry, CBS Radio News station KCBS-AM reports.

KCBS-AM reports that police said a shooting in a Cupertino parking lot was connected to the quarry shooting.

Also, a man matching the police's description of the gunman allegedly tried to carjack a woman in Cupertino and then shot her in the leg, police told KCBS-AM. He then fled on foot.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said the hospital received from the quarry shooting two of the victims, who were in good and fair condition. Their names and the extent of their wounds were not immediately released.

One victim was taken to the emergency room at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, according to spokeswoman Paula Zimlicki.

The hospital cannot release any details about the patient or the patient's injuries, she said.

According to the Santa Clara County website, Permanente Quarry is a limestone and aggregate mining operation and cement plant located in the foothills above Cupertino.

Just because a news story has a gun associated with it does NOT make it suitable for discussion on THR. News stories are suitable for discussion here only when the story contains clear and unambiguous self-defense, home defense, firearms-centric, or RKBA aspects *and* when there is readily discernible detail in the news accounts sufficient to support a rational discussion.

By the way, the news article linked just says "rifle" now, not "assault rifle".
