Jeez, I'm sure you guys have talked about this quite a bit, but my friend who's a bit of an anti was telling me that kids were sold firearms at a gun show. He told me that there was video of it happening in which it was in the movie..

I have not seen the movie, so I was trying to find a reference to this scene in which I could not through the web. I did however find a page here about the BS in bowling for columbine in which they contradict most of mr moores facts. Again, this particular scene was not mentioned.

Finally I was telling him that I found a page in which all of this is contradicted and he said "buddy, I'm not trying to rag on you, but references on the net are invalid, all universities do not accept references found on the web, only those from published books"
I got pretty pissed as the facts I found mostly had references to books, or news articles in which I thought were perfectly valid. He said that it doesn't matter and pretty much summed up that facts found on the net are invalid anwyways lol. We got interrupted by a customer and we left it at that, I didn't really want to talk to him anymore as my methods for proving him wrong are apparently invalid...

Point being, I'm pissed, and quite frankly I want to contradict this particular scene that he's mentioning in which all of this arguing started on. I just can't fathom the fact that kids bought guns without any kind of background/age check, I just can't see it happening in the states. There must have been something illegal about it, or something for it to happen.

Can anyone help me out here?

Well, I think it's only fair that if you have to cite serious sources, so does he. Problem solved :D

I admitt to being reluctant to even comment on this can of worms put together by Mr. Moore .

I will remind anyone however that the law here is "kids" are not allowed to purchase firearms legaly. The age for long guns is 18 ,and 21 for handguns.

Private sales are generaly restricted to 18 years of age, but out of 500 million people it is likely you will find someone willing to break some law at some point.

Because there was some video in a movie doesn't mean it happened in real life, or happens on any sort of regular basis , or is legal. So your friend bases his facts on a movie, but your suppose to get yours from a published book ?

I have learned that is is useless to argue with "Mooreheads", they are immune to facts or logic. And, since your friend also has an irrational bias against internet research, you are doubly handicapped.

Oh, your friend is wrong by the way, the Columbine shooters did not get their guns at a gun show. They bought them from friends who were old enough to legally buy firearms.

Here is a good site about the movie in general, it does not address the source of the guns, but that info is readily available.

So your friend bases his facts on a movie, but your suppose to get yours from a published book ?

Good point. And its not even a factual documentary! "Bowling for Columbine" is less of an accurate documentary than "This is Spinal Tap". :)

Hey, thanks for that. Now I know what the hell really happened in the movie because I knew that there was no way that kids bought friggen guns at a gun show. Legal adults did for the kids.

But yea, good point, and I think thats what I was trying to get at with our argument, that he gets facts from a movie, and I have to get mine from a published book lol.

I'm such a terrible debater, I really must admit, and it ALWAYS seems that after the argument has happened and I have time to reflect on it, that I realize what I should have said, what I should have asked, what point I should have made etc....

Its really frustrating as just basic arguments seem to get the better of me, maybe its because I get so wound up about it, angry, that I don't think clearly and I start getting confused etc..

Oh well, I'll have a chat with him later lol.

I *think* the scene he may be referring to is where Moore convinces some of the victims to go and try (and succeed) in buying ammo from a K-Mart while underage. This may be one of the scant few moments of anything resembling something that makes you go "hmmm".

I once substitute taught for an old teacher of mine in Highschool...she left me this video and a note to "go over it with the kids". I did...and at the end of the class I'd like to think a majority of the kids realized who and what the true badguys were.
