Another "Destroyed" Enfield to be Saved

I agree, it looks like a well done sporterizing job and I would leave it as-is. Certainly not "destroyed". :rolleyes:
 
Being made in Australia in 1942 who know's it could be an original jungle carbine (before the No5 Mk1 came along). One of the first things the Aussies did when fighting in the jungle in New Guinea was cut down there Lee Enfields. The jungle was so thick and they were so close to the Japanese they didn't need sights on there rifles just point and shoot like a shotgun.

When the Japanese invaded New Guinea in 1942 Australia was left wide open as most of our regular Army were in North Africa fighting the Germans. To stop the Japanese advance Australia quickly put together a volunteer militia force to meet and at least slow the Japanese advance until our Army could be recalled from Africa to fight the Japanese in New Guinea. Being outnumbered 10 to 1 with almost no training, no Artillery, Heavy Weapons or Machine Guns and only armed with there trusty Lee Enfield SMLE they slowed and even stopped the Japanese advance until they were reinforced.
