I just leafed through a Guns and Ammo: Handguns Magazine article about that extreme shock ammo. What an idiotic article. The guy just basically repeats all of the company's sales spiel. He did all this gel testing (I'm sure the gel wasn't properly calibrated) and "shoot through drywall" testing (which seems to be the latest trend in backyard bullet testing). He specifically says in the article that the fang face ammo is designed to penetrate 14 inches (of course they're going to say that as that's roughly the standard for penetration in just about any legit law enforcement agency that does ammo testing as well as the FBI standard). The guy showed a picture of the gel block with a .357 fang face round in it with a ruler next to it. The furthest piece barely penetrated almost to eight inches and yet in his piece he's saying the ammo performed exactly as advertised! That level of obvious journalistic whoring is despicable.

He showed some gel blocks for other rounds that barely penetrated 6 inches.

No, I'm not surprised at this as it's a regular occurence in the gun rags...this one is just so blatant though! The author's name was Phil Johnston. At the end he's referring to Extreme Shock's dubious claims that these are designed for the Federal Air Marshall's and says something to the effect of "I sure hope this really is what our air marhsall's are using!" Personally I DON'T as I prefer the terrorists DEAD.

I wish I was 1/10 as knowledgeable as they think they are

I'm sure it isn't the ammo's fault-they must've forgotten to shoot it out of $4100 1911.

The gun mags have plummeted in quality over the past 20 years. They now just shill for whatever brand send them stuff to use and/or test.

Altogether too many of the gun magazines are just vehicles for company press releases. The opinions at the High Road may be considerably more variable, but it's usually not too difficult to figure out what to believe and what not.

Expect nothing less from gun rags these days. They've all pretty much become repetitive artidles of advertising bias. Ever see them have a bad review? Of course not, that could lose them advertising from that manufacturer. Also, just how many more artciles need to be written on 1911's? Anything that could ever be said about them has been. No wonder I cancelled all my susscriptions and stopped frequenting the periodical stands.

They actually tested that stuff? I thought it was a gag at first and bought two of the 5-packs just to hang them on my wall. The "Agent" guy is classic!

It is out there with my press and my buddies always laugh about it when we are reloading. If I remember correctly it is really pricey too but an AGENT uses it!

Just out of curiosity, are there any credible gun magazines left? Every once in a while I'll look through a magazine rack and never seem to see anything that isn't just a shill.

Nico,

No, but IMO there are very few credible AUTHORS left even though the large part of the magazine may have sold out. I think possibly Clint Smith fits that bill.
