This is a top quality commercially available version of the Bowie designs from 19th century American And English companies. Katz Knives of Chandler, Arizona commissions them from the best available materials. The blade is ten inches long- nine and a half inches of sharpened blade ahead of the choil/ one quarter inch wide and one and a half inches thick. Blade material is 440 C + Stainless. The pictured grips are faux ivory/micarta, with rosewood, stag and crown stag also available. It comes with a sheath of shoulder cowhide.

This particular steel seems to be able to maintain the flesh-parting agressive sharpness you find in some high carbon blades with the added advantage of being virtually impervious to rust or chemical etching. Over the years, I have become fairly adept with a straight razor and was able to get just as close a shave with one of these knives.

Being mainly a gun person, I was fairly surprised to find that the Katz Bowies jump started my interest in knives and the stag version of this is now part of my gear.

The retail seems to be right at four hundred dollars.

Ouch!!! That's quite a lot of frogskins for a knife! I guess holding it in my hands might change my mind. Nowadays people really don't have too many needs for so much knife. In the olden days owning a good blade could be the difference between life and death!

Yup! Looks like its back ta makin my own! Likes lookin but ownins a bite i cant afford right now!

I believe there is some possibility of finding a dealer who will sell for a bit less. Even so, it'll still be expensive as Katz insists on the best materials and isn't trying to make a low cost knife.

Dont doubt it! Didnt say wasnt WORTH it, just aint got that kinda doe ray me in my pocket fer a knife right now.

AN i CAN preciate a fellow that insists on tha BEST in material, I WORK FOR ONE!

Right! but those cowboy action shooters have huge bank accounts.

It sure would make a nice match with a faux ivory/micarta revolver grip. :D
Are those bicolored handle rivets, brass pins surrounded by steel handle inserts of some sort?
There seems to be a growing number of custom knife makers that show up at the small area gun/knife shows that I've attended, and they seem to come from all over the region.
I always used to look forward to seeing the A.G. Russell Knife catalogs too. They sell a product called "Rust Free" that's pure liquid silicone for metal protection from fingerprints etc..., I use it to replenish the silicone impregnated gun cloths used for rubbing down firearms and knives after handling. Ever try it? A bottle lasts for years.
