Norinco #2 has a case of flanged upper lugs . I got a Springfield Armory "take out" barrel from a forum member , the barrel fits/feeds/functions fine and the headspace is good but the barrel hood isn't a tight fit to the slide . Looking through old gun magazines I see where it was once a standard practice to weld and refit the hood for a tighter lockup is this still a good idea ? will the welding affect the barrel heat treat ? My son is a machinist and can get the slide welded , should it be Mig or Tig or what ? Or should I just Spend the $$ for a new barrel ?

Barrel

Howdy,

Depends on a couple things. How much gap is there in the hood to breechface fit? If it's just a few thousandths, it's not really a concern.
Production pistols have been that way for years. More pressing is:
How much barrel end-play is there in the slide? The more play, the harder the barrel and slide lugs slap when the gun is fired...leading to accelerated lug deformation. .005 inch or so isn't critical. .010 inch is a bit loose. .015 isn't conducive to long barrel lug life, but serviceable for a light use/carry gun.

Tuner ,
Barrel has .006 gap between hood and breechface and when in battery has less play , it is really tighter than the original Norinco barrel in my other Norinco . I guess I'll just keep shooting it and keep an eye on things .
thanks

.005 inch is pretty good, bro. There's a lotta factory Colts that are looser.
