I've had a few odd questions here, and just thought of another.

Are there any 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm etc cartridges derived from the 223/5.56? I guess I should be sure, so is the 300 Blackout a 30 caliber derived from the 223/5.56 case?

I see a 6x45 in many of the reloading manuals. OAL is the same as 556 so I’m guessing it’s designed for ARs

Actually, 204 Ruger was developed from the 222 Remington Magnum which pre-dated the 223 Remington.

A more appropriate title for the thread might be cartridges developed from 222 Remington/ 222 Remington Magnum/223 Remington family of cases.

The 222 Remington is the granddaddy of the group.

The major options are covered above. I'd just like to briefly comment on the 7mmTCU. I recently acquired one in a TC contender. So far I've found it accurate, relatively mild to shoot, and easy to load. I've loaded 120-154 grain bullets so far, and may use it for short range deer this year with the 130 grain Speer HC. Sizing has been easy, and I've noticed no difference in accuracy between fire formed 7 TCU and resized .223. So despite the cautions on life span of resized military brass, I've been resizing LC range brass to this caliber and consider it expendable. Presently working on a stockpile of commercial .223 once fired to make dedicated 7 TCU brass. After a trip through the sizing die, all have landed within the specs for max case OAL, and I've gotten about a 95% success rate on resizing military brass (the other 5% suffer various fatal flaws in the sizing process from telescoped necks to split necks). If the OP is interested in a foray into a wildcat .223 based cartridge, one of the TCU rounds would be outstanding. The 7 TCU is readily available in used contender barrels, the other TCUs are available as custom chamberings for the TC or short action rifles.

6x45, 6mm mongoose, 300 ham'r, 25-45 sharps, 277 wolverine, 6 TCU, 6.5 TCU, 7 TCU, .30 TCU, .25 ugalde, 17 Remington, 204 Ruger, 20 practical, 223 Ackley improved, 22 TCM, 7.62x40 WT, others I'm sure.
And I like nearly all of those more than 223. If the army hadn't adopted it for some misguided reason , I'd call it a great coyote round and forget all about it. {I know the theory and history, and it has certainly killed it's share of people, I just don't agree that it's a great round. Don't get your panties in a bunch, it's my opinion, you feel free to have yours.}

I really like the 300 hammer, the 25-45 sharps, and the 277 wolverine. And the ackley version of any cartridge warms my heart. I like the way they look, even if they don't justify the conversion in terms of performance.

I have a 15" T/C 7mmTCU barrel for the Contender.
Making the transition from 223/5.56 to 7mmTCU is a easy process. Just lube the 223/5.56 cases and sent them thru the 7mmTCU resizer die.
Trim, prime, put powder in the case and then seat the bullet.
As mentioned above I don't see any difference in accuracy between newly reformed brass and fire formed brass.

On the 300 Blackout they sell a jig to put the 223/5.56 case in and cut it to close to the proper lenght.
Then resize it in the 300 blackout resizer die, trim, replace primer, add powder, seat bullet and done. Harbor Freight sells a electric mimi cut off saw that take small 2" blades to do the butying.
On Ebay you can get the 300 Blackout jig from $12 on up to around $30.

I bought both the Harbor Freight cut off saw and a 300 Blackout jig, just haven't had time to play with it yet.
I just picked up 500 pounds of range brass so I will have plenty of 223/5.56 brass to transform in to 7mTCU and 300 Blackout.

I recall the 6.5 TCU (Thompson Center Ugalde... after Wes Ugalde, the originator) was all the rage for silhouette shooting and deer-antelope hunting for many years. The shooters I knew who had one sweared it was the best thing going out of a contender.

If I didn’t already have a myriad of overlap in the safe, making one on a short action with an 18” barrel would have been a fun project.

Stay safe.

There have been thousands of calibers worked up. There really isnt much that hasnt been done. Things get revisited with new propellants and projectiles.

221 fireball used a 222 parent case too. Which means 20 vartag and 17 Rem Fireball fall in there too. And 6x35 PDW.

223 based wildcats range down to 14 caliber. 30 cal is pretty well max.

The guys in thw pre-internet days were crazy. Ackley necked a 378 Weatherby Mag down to 22 in the 60s... 5.56x80mm or so at 4600 fps.
Herrett necked a 30-30 up to 357.

When will someone neck a 50 BMG down to 17 cal? :what:

Isn't the 350 legend based on a 223 case? I'm actually quite intrigued by that cartridge.
