As I was out today checking a rather distant pawn shop for a deal on a single six .22, they had in their display a new single six in .17 HMR. Being unfamiliar with this round, I wasn't too sure on springing for the price they were asking. I'm sure the price of ammo would be quite a lot more than .22lr but my question is, about how much more? The price on the nib was $350. They did have a used .22 @ $329 but it was kinda marked up and scratched.
Anybody got some input on the .17HMR?

Cost of ammo is between $10.00 and $12.95 for a box of 50... Buying in bulk will save about $.35 to $.80 per box... I don't have a handgun in this round, but do have Savage and Marlin Bolt Action Rifles in .17HMR... Zippy little round...

I have a Taurus revolver in 17 HMR and a CZ Rifle as well. The round performs great out of the 24" barreled rifle. So-so out of the 5" barrel revolver. I do not shoot the revolver much any more, going with my Single Six instead (cheaper).

Single Six

silverking: Sir; the .17hmr is an outstanding round. Louder than a .22mag. faster, and ?more? accurate. cost more to shoot
I shoot the Single Six .22:D with the unused .22mag cylinder.
I will have the Single Six .17hmr.
Price? seems all over the country; NC CLT area; about the same as you found.

Appreciate the responses to my inquiry. As good as that hmr17 looked, guess I'll keep looking for the single six in .22lr. I would go right out and pick one up nib, but with the way the economy has been here, I keep thinking I'm going to find a good deal at a pawn shop. The one I saw yesterday was sweet but the transfer bar was missing. Not being that knowledgeable about repairs, I didn't want to jump too soon. The dealer gave me this info so I figured he was a reliable and honest source to keep in mind. The shop I visited has been around for a long time so I guess they're ok.

I would wait for a nice used 22lr Single Six too or just buy a new one outright. I picked mine up in 1999 and it is the gun that I have fired the most rounds through since that time! Very inexpensive to shoot , pretty good accuracy and one of the most pleasant to shoot handguns as you will ever find. Not knocking the 17HMR - actually have one in a Marlin 17 rifle but for a revolver like the Single Six, the 22lr is ideal for range use , informal target and good old plinking! Plus you always have the option of using the 22 mag.

I really like my 22LR/22Mag convertable. I'm sort of a minority on the gunboards, but I like shooting 22mag better than 22LR in the gun. It's only six shots and 22mag just feels like it gives you more for the hassle of reloading the thing. :p

It's really nice to be able to shoot both rounds though. Usually I'll shoot some of both.
