We stopped at a dollar store below the house to look around earlier today. I was in back looking at the toys :)p ). There were two little kids back there with their mom. There were some plastic suction cup shooting guns hanging up and one of the kids goes "Look mama, guns!" The mom said "No,no,no. You know we don't touch or talk about guns. We don't like guns."

"Poor kids." I thought as I adjusted my shoulder holster.

Betting Pool:

The mom said "No,no,no. You know we don't touch or talk about guns. We don't like guns."

Odds of one or both of these little ones becoming involved in AD/ND situation: Pretty Dang Good.

Odds of Mama completely failing to recognize her negligence and screaming for a total ban on all firearms: Even Better.

Yeesh. Just stick your head in the sand and nothing bad will ever happen to anyone. :banghead: :fire:

Jeez, the more you demonize something the more attractive it gets. They'll proably grow up to be an anti, or be involved in an AD/ND situation. Hopefully they'll realize that a firearm is a tool, and learn to accept them, and hopefully, embrace them. :)

My neighbor's grandson plays with my son, and she used to have the same opinion. Needless to say, I was more than willing to point out that since her grandson was a pretty normal 9 year old, I had already caught him up in the tree fort shooting people with his semi auto finger, as well as mowing people down with what looked like an air cooled, belt fed, hockey stick! :D

Anti's-aren't they a hoot? :neener: geegee

Yea well.. I'm developing a theory. Its quite simple.

Most people aren't really sentient. Sure, they walk, talk and stand upright. But they don't want to learn, don't want to know how to even maintain the basic equipment that makes up their society. They.. just watch tv, rather than think or talk. They diet, instead of labor.

In short they are just animals that speak our language. Instead of acting, planning, organizing.. they just react as animals. Its only becoming obvious because people have a choice of merely existing within it; or embracing and learning as much as they can to do for themselves.

Good post, mrming. I think you're right.
The mom said "No,no,no. You know we don't touch or talk about guns. We don't like guns."
I was awfully proud of my son (who was six at the time) the day his grandpa said something like that to him. My son responded, "Grandpa, maybe you don't, but I do..."

Teaching 'em to think for themselves is hard.

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you: but if you really make them think, they'll hate you. -- Don Marquis

Standing wolf: For those with the potential to be sentient, its a matter of allowing it. For others.. it can be taught, if you don't meddle around with alot of BS.

I could be wrong, but I have a amazingly simple outlook. There are only two things that really need to be taught.

DONT HURT PEOPLE!

and

Tis better to do for yourself, than be dependent on others.

Everything else just sorta flows from that.. self-defense, self-reliance, honesty, and healthy attitudes towards sex and religion....

The world becomes a very ugly place once you start accepting that.. most members of your species are so limited in thought that they couldnt satisfy a good definition of sentience..

I'm begining to agree with you on this one.

The more I interact with people at large, the more I am astounded by the breadth and depths of human stupidity.

And yet, at the same time, I am ever astonished by the degree and caliber (pun intended) of genius in the minority, be it Leonardo DaVinci, or pax's kids :)

There's hope, just watch out for the 1,000 soccer-moms and their idoit kids that each one of us has to contend with.

I wonder if she's going to take the same attitude towards teaching her kids responsibility around sexual situations.

As the comedian Gallagher once remarked, "The world today is geared toward people with a bovine mentality. Those big velvet ropes at the bank are just a corral telling you which way to MOOve!"

I saw/heard the same sort of thing at the local grocery store yesterday. A guy around my age, maybe a little older (late 20's/early 30's) went into the beer room at the store, and some little kid started yelling..."Mommy, mommy someone went into that room." Mom, seemed to think that was pretty normal/acceptable behavior for her kid.

I wouldn't want my kids buying toy guns at the Dollar Store. They'll get real ones that will last longer :)

I always wanted to have toy guns when I was a kid, and my parents would never get me some. They didn't even let me buy one with my allowance.

Determined not to go unarmed in our little neighbourhood war, I borrowed Dad's tools and simply built a couple detailed rifles and pistol from pieces of wood. My parents were so impressed with my woodworking abilities that they had no further objections...

The acceptance and even promotion of a lack of independent thinking skills is responsible for so much ill in the world. Willful ignorance is the new rallying cry of the people, and the youngest generations are being infected from birth. It's a hard cycle to break.

Nightfall: I have to disagree. This has been a very long term problem.. and is so ingrained in human society that its hard to speak out against it. I mean, how exactly do you speak against teaching children 'proper values' ?

With only one or two VERY rare exception no major religion is actually about acceptance and love. They all seem to be about... obey. fight the infidels. Convert others. Then you'll be accepted and loved. But don't you dare ever leave or stop giving us money for you'll burn in hell!

Most people want their kids to be younger, mirror images of themselves. Religion, beliefs, culture are all force fed to them and the complexity of what they are fed seems to have increased proportionally to technology. So despite more tools and logic being avaliable to them... their basic 'values and culture' just wash away critical thinking skills and faith in thier own thought processes.

Some people are capable enough to see past it and use it as an enslavement tool. Others just sorta waddle forward and recreate younger versions of themselves. A few of us are raised to be independent (or close enough to break out)... but to do what? :uhoh:

And thats back to what I said originally. Lots of people can't think or do for themselves, and lack any compassion or thought of how their lives affect others....

If you can't understand your own equipment.. can't comprehend (or be bothered to) the effects your life has on others... how are you self aware? Isn't that the definition of sentience, being aware of self and your actions? How are they any different than birds eating rocks to grind seeds in their gullet.. or squrrils and racoons opening doors to get at food?
