Anti-gun SB1 Moving in GA Senate (Republicans Stab Gun Owners in the Back)

(Atlanta, Thursday, February 20) -- Good news: the HB197 Stealth Triggerlock bill is temporarily stalled in the Georgia House. In the face of relentless pressure from gun owners, to the amazement of many observers, the HB197 juggernaut ground to a halt this week. To everybody who helped resist this back door attack on your rights: you are great activists!

Now the BAD NEWS: no sooner did gun owners gain the upper hand in the House, the so-called "Child Endangerment" coalition of anti-gunners, metro-area prosecutors, and "Hillary Clinton-clone" child-grabbers scurried across the Capitol to plead their case with State Senate boss Sen. Eric Johnson (R-Savannah).

You remember 3 weeks ago, Senate Judiciary Chairman Sen. Charlie Tanksley (R-Marietta) tried to sneak the HB197 Stealth Triggerlock language through his committee as a substitute for SB1 when he thought nobody was looking.

But CSG was there and caught him red-handed. And your overwhelming response shut him down. Then Senate bosses told Mr. Tanksley to cool it and that's when HB197 was formally introduced in the House.

Coalition ringleaders were shocked gun owners stalled HB197 in the House. They went hat-in-hand to Sen. Johnson, whom they don't like, but is known to be a compromiser. And for a price, Mr. Johnson stabbed gun owners in the back by cutting a deal to support the SB1 substitute.

Yesterday, in a snap meeting, a Senate subcommittee approved SB1 with the Stealth Triggerlock language, and yep, you guessed it: a rider added by Sen. Johnson (to jack up certain penalties for contributing to the deprivation of a minor). CSG Legislative Director Bill Phillips made the hearing, but this time the opposition was ready and waiting.

The deal means the anti-gunners are rolling again, Sen. Johnson looks tough on crime, and the Stealth Triggerlock legislation (now SB1) is out of its cage in the Senate.

Bill Phillips declared, "They might have got the jump on us with this double-cross, but we're not going to sit around and let them get away with it."

Pressure works! It's vital you act immediately to send the politicians a message they shouldn't stab you in the back. Your right to self-defense is on the line in the Georgia State Senate.

Action Items

1. This is crucial: call the office of Sen. President Pro Tem Eric Johnson as soon as possible at 404-656-5109 and leave a message you're disappointed he's supporting the SB1 substitute with the HB197 Stealth Triggerlock language by House anti-gun ringleader Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur).

2. Make double-sure your message gets through by sending Sen. Johnson a FAX at 404-657-9727, calling his Savannah office at 912-354-4626, or e-mailing him at: [email protected]

3. Forward this alert to every gun owner you know.

The second half of the Georgia Stealth Triggerlock battle has begun. Stay tuned--CSG will keep you posted.

HB197 Advances and Awaits

(Atlanta, Wednesday, February 12) -- The HB197 Stealth Triggerlock bill passed the Georgia House Judiciary Committee yesterday.

A key vote on the Self-Defense amendment to protect your right to keep guns ready for self-defense has been delayed until HB197 reaches the floor of the House. That could happen as early as Fri. morning Feb. 14.

The anti-gunners pushing HB197 panicked Monday after it looked like gun owners might pass the Self-Defense amendment in committee.

Rep. Wendell Willard (R-Dunwoody), the front man for HB197, went running to House Republican leaders to complain Rep. Warren Massey (R-Winder) was bringing too much heat on Republican members of the Judiciary Committee.

Mr. Massey withdrew from sponsoring the Self-Defense amendment yesterday. Many gun owners were disappointed. HB197 then quickly passed the committee by a vote of 18 to 1, with only Rep. Pam Stephenson (D-Lithonia) voting against it she said because the committee stripped out an exception for victims of domestic violence.

House Pro-Gun Leader Bobby Franklin (R-Marietta) will offer the Self-Defense amendment to HB197 directly from the floor when it comes before the full House.
That could happen as early as Fri. morning Feb 14.

CSG Legislative Director Bill Phillips helped manage the HB197 debate Monday in committee. He said, "Rep. Massey carried the ball for gun owners as far as he could. He forced the anti-gunners to make two big mistakes:

1. They admitted HB197 is a stealth triggerlock bill: you'll have to lock up your gun so it's not ready for self-defense or else face going to jail.

2. They showed they're scared witless of the Self-Defense amendment to HB197 because it guts their Stealth Triggerlock scheme."

The Self-Defense amendment to HB197 says "keeping or storing a firearm in such a manner that it is unlocked or otherwise ready for immediate use in self-defense shall not be considered criminal negligence."

The CSG Legislative Director added, "House Pro-Gun Leader Rep. Bobby Franklin is chomping at the bit to force a vote on the Self-Defense amendment so gun owners can know how their Reps. stand on this vital issue. Bobby couldn't do it before because he wasn't on the committee. Now the bill is out of committee, and he can take charge on the floor."

Rep. Franklin said passing the Self-Defense amendment depends on one thing: you putting pressure on your own state Rep. to vote right.

If HB197 becomes law without the Self-Defense amendment, anti-gun officials could come to your home or in your car, arrest you, and confiscate your guns if they're not locked up.

It's crucial you call the office of your state Representative(s) as soon as possible and leave a message saying vote for the Self-Defense amendment to HB197.

Meanwhile, the NRA is still on the sidelines. They're scared anti-gunners will claim they're against children. The NRA lobbyist told the House Judiciary Committee the NRA is neither for the bill nor against it. Of course anti-gunners are saying "the NRA is not opposed to HB197" which is only half the truth.

You need to act to defend your right to keep and bear arms. What happened in committee earlier this week is history. You need to call again. Contact the office of your own State Rep. as soon as possible and leave a message saying vote for the Self-Defense amendment to HB197.

Where can I get more info on this bill? I'd like to know the parameters and have an idea of what I am talking about before opening my mouth.

I just have to wonder...if the intended victim would be held criminally liable if his gun were not locked( trigger locked and "not ready for self defense")...would the law add aggrevating circumstances to charges against the BG if his gun is not trigger locked when the attack starts? That "even playing field" is a scary thing to the antis, isn't it?
