Subject: Ga. House to Vote on Child Bill

(Atlanta, Thursday, March 18) -- The Georgia House of Representatives will vote on Gov. Sonny Perdue's "child cruelty" bill SB467 tomorrow Fri. Mar. 19. It passed the Georgia State Senate earlier this session.

SB467 is a revised version of the SB1 Stealth Triggerlock bill which passed the Senate last year, but stalled in the House on the final day.

The so-called "child endangerment" code section from SB1, a direct threat to your right to self-defense, was not included in SB467. Furthermore, SB467 has been "engrossed" so it cannot be amended to add gun control back in.

Nonetheless, depending on future court rulings, SB467 could allow overzealous prosecutors to charge people with child cruelty if a child is injured in an accident.

CSG does NOT SUPPORT SB467.

"This is bad legislation--vague and overly broad," said CSG President Marston Tuck, "but it is not a gun control bill."

"It does however give the anti-gunners better 'field position' to come at us with a triggerlock bill in the future," he added.

CSG members should act accordingly.

SB467 was approved by the House Judiciary Committee last week, after Gov. Perdue claimed Chairman Tom Bordeaux (D-Savannah) was stalling the bill. Today, House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman) fired Mr. Bordeaux and named anti-gun extremist Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur) as the new chairman.

CSG will be watching Ms. Oliver's committee closely for the rest of the session and report to you immediately if she tries anything sneaky. Stay tuned.
