Any .50 BMG owners?

See my thread of 6/25/10....grandson and I shooting our LAR Grizzly Big Boar (their spelling not mine). It was awesome! 300 yard range. I chose the LAR since it was highly recommended AND it fits in the safe easily.

I've got the Barrett M99 and happen to like mine a lot. Not cheap to buy but worth every dollar, in my opinon!

Acera....yes, that's the thread. Thanks for posting the link....gf wasn't around to help me so the date was the best I could do.

Yup, American Shooting Center. Very nice folks there and they have tremendous prices on obscure ammo....I picked up two boxes of Hornady 500 gn Lott ammo for $20 per box cheaper than what I've been paying. .50BMG was a little more by about $3 per box but no shipping charges so it just about comes out the same. Not implying it costs $3 per box to ship but once in the catalogs I always find other "stuff" I need/want/can't live without, etc, etc!

Thanks Fleetman,

I figured it was American. Hot Wells is pretty finicky on the 50's, you should call first and see if they are in the mood for them. Good chance you can shoot on weekdays, but hardly ever on weekends there. Clear Creek is pretty good, that is the last formal range I shot mine on. Just let the girl tell you the rules a couple of times and feign interest, then she gets real cool once she sees you can shoot safely.

For ammo, try DSA. They have it for as little as $2.50 a round in 10 round boxes.

Thanks Acera for the info on ammo.....I will be purchasing some.

We are moving to Pa next week and my gf has already looked up a couple of ranges that accommodate BMG's. One of them is close to Lewistown which is also close to some of my relatives so I will be able to knock out two "chores" in one shot!

I would love one. My friend has an AR50 and it is just awesome. But, after a shoulder surgery I have become a recoil wuss... Just the perils of getting old I guess.

Good Luck on your move Fleetman, hate to see a shooter leave Texas.

(Be careful packing that 50, if you let one loose accidentally I am in within it's range if it's pointed south east:p)

I jusst read a posting by someone on personal choice outfitters .com who mentioned buying a Barret. They said that it was the best purchase they had ever made. He had some insight has to how to break it in properly. It was very interesting.

I have one of the first M99 bought way back in 1999. Though portable, the recoil is much stiffer than most other 50s. I even shot a FCSA 1000yd match with it competing in the light and heavy gun classes. After 125 plus rounds for three days, my shoulder was a little sore. I believe the new muzzle brakes now have three ports vs two on mine. So the recoil may be tamer on the new models. FWIW, the late Skip Talbot broke some FCSA records with his M99 at Reno.

We have handled several of the Barrett 50's. Had several customers use us as a transfer dealer.

Got invited out a couple times to shoot them too after the customers got them.

Great fun, but ya need a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG backyard for sure.

Snowy

Have any of you guys shot the EDM Arms Windrunner? I just put 3000 down on one and from what I've read they are one of the more accurate 50's out there and supposedly they use remington 700 trigger assemblies and ar15 grips.

Never shot a .50, but I shot a 98B in .338LM, and I flinched in fear of recoil, but that rifle was a sweet shooter, and I don't recall more recoil than my .308, but the owner forgot his plugs and shot it once and nearly cried, he couldn't hear a word for minutes, so that tells you the brake works.
But I always find comfort with my .308 in the corner, not too big to worry about cost, not too small to worry about being underpowered when you need it.
But if you can afford ammo I can see it being fun.

Ferret 50

I have a Ferret 50 by Spider Firearms. It is a very high quality, accurate rifle and it is also reasonably priced. I shoot mine all the time and have become a huge fan of the 50BMG. Check out the Ferret 50, I am sure you will be impressed. http://www.ferret50.com/

I just recieved a quote from Mcmillan on building me a custom 50 repeater. I would love to find out if anyone has any experience with their rifles or have heard any bad feedback on them.

I recieved a reply to my thread from a guy stating that you could not use brakes in competitons. Is that true? How can that be true in regards to 50 cal? How can you shoot one without a brake?

Very cool gun to add to the collection if you have room to shoot it. I DON'T have room (max range around here is 300 yards and they only allow .50 on thursday for a few hours in the afternoon) but I STILL wanted to get one just because it's such a novelty. I am glad I waited a few weeks and reconsidered. Getting a .308 instead.

Do they break down easily to put in the safe? If not what are you gonna do with it for storage? Do you WANT to have to break it down every time you put it away and take up a lot of room in the safe? Just thinking out loud here.

Anyway I found a lot of very good deals by doing Google searches and on the gun auction sites. I think the novelty wears out fast. I wouldn't bother getting one new, it doesn't seem like the kind of gun that gets a lot of usage in a lot of states.

jcvfdlurch, there are some classes/divisions of competition shooting that preclude brakes. This is used to "even the playing field" by effectively restricting the shooter to smaller cartridges. The solution for someone that is shooting in such events is simply to pick the right tool for the job...the .50BMG isn't it, neither is a .408CT, .416Barrett, .375CT, or even the wee little .338LM. Most of which would probably be excluded from such divisions solely due to excessive weight, whether a muzzle device is included or not. In all honesty the sub-.50cal cartridges mentioned above are probably much better suited to competition use due to lesser recoil and in many cases superior ballistics.

Zak, if you happen to still be tuning in, I was wondering if you thought the NM variant of the Armalite AR-50 to be a worthwhile upgrade? Not real high on the list, but a big 50 might be in my distant future (mostly for destructive tomfoolery, but as Col. Whelen stated "only accurate rifles are interesting").

:)

I'd love one but I don't know of anyplace to shoot it, i'm also a cheapskate when it comes to ammo and 2.50 a shot just don't entice me. Although if I get the chance to shoot one i'd spring for a few shots. If I won the lottery I promise you that i'd have one:)

The AR-50 in normal trim is a great deal, a good serviceable .50 for sport shooting. The guys I know who have them get better than 1 MOA with their reloads. The NM has some changes that seem to be intended for 1000 yard BR competition. I haven't handled one. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

anyone had any experience with bushmaster ba50's i belive they are. saw a couple on gunbroker with a couple hundred rounds of ammo for 4k. looked good, any reviews?
