I'm military and its that time again for me to change what base I'm and I'm off to Washington. Where is the best place in town to purchase my gun goodies and the nice ranges?

I just left Ft Lewis, I'll give you all the info. If you want more, feel free to PM me.

First place is Bull's Eye Tacoma. They were free for AD military every Tuesday, so every Tuesday was range night for me.

Next place is The Marksman in Puyallup. Haven't been there in years, but my wife liked it better then Bullseye.

Range 15 on Ft. Lewis is open to privately owned weapons, but you are supposed to register them before taking them on base. To get to Range 15, go out the east gate for one mile. It's 5 per person and open 10-4 on weekends.

For ammo and guns, go to Surplus Ammo and Arms off I-5 at Exit 124. Best prices around.

If you reload, try Doug Anderson for components.

There's a few good places to shoot in the capitol state forest too.

Here's another good website

I would highly recommend living in DuPont.

Thanks for the info. I'm renting first cause the wife and I aren't sure if we wanna live there or not... Any rental companies to avoid?

I haven't rented there in several years, and then I lived on post so I couldn't really tell you which ones to avoid. Post housing was nice, but there are restrictions on CCW on post which makes it inconvenient. It's a joint base now, so post housing assignments don't really depend on branch of service.

Where am I supposed to register firearms at? Is that registration for the base or for the range (referring to the one on base)

If you're Army you can register them at Waller Hall. If you're AF, I'm not sure. All weapons brought on post are supposed to be registered. The only time you'll have to produce the registration is if you get searched on the way in and have a weapon, or your command might ask.

I live very close to both Paul Bunyan and Tacoma sportsmans club.

I have not shot at Paul Bunyan but from what I have seen it seems to have the nicer facility but its more expensive and members only. TSC is alright but what your allowed to do is pretty limited. No rapid fire (not even a controlled double tap) 10round mag in a magazine.

As for buying guns check out Marys Pistols in Tacoma.

I just bought a 1911 so I won't be in the market for a pistol for a bit. My next gun will be an AR15. Is there a law in Washington stating you can only have a 10 rd magazine? or is that just a range rule?

its not a law at all. Some ranges only allow you to load a certain number of rounds in a magazine as a safety precaution/means of slowing down your rate of fire.

WA does not have any type of 'assault weapon' restrictions. I've never shot at a range in WA that cared how big my magazine was. There is a 3 waiting period for handguns if you don't have a WA CPL. OC is legal, but not advised.

Olympic Arms is just down the road off exit 116 and they give military discounts. Rainier Arms is up about 30 minutes north of the base. Surplus ammo and arms has good prices on parts and full rifles. I bought a complete lower from them for 180.

Interesting. Know how much they have P-Mags for by chance? I hear they're the best from everyone I talk to. If they're cheaper there I'll wait to buy.

for shooting aroound Tacoma
bullseye - Sucks
Marksman - sucks less then bullseye
Range 15 is Lame

Surplus Ammo is good for ammo and guns.
Capital forest is getting bad - no sense of respomibility by the users.

I shoot at Gig Harbor Sportsman club - military rate is 5 bucks 100 yard rifle and 25 yard pistol ranges. 5 round centerfire limit - great place

I also shoot at Kitsap Rifle. 25 yard pistol, 200 yard rifle. no round or mag size limit. If you own it you can shoot it. We also have USSPA shoots, falling steel plate practise on Tuesday and a steel plate match once a month. With a safety class you can shoot the action bay.- great place.

Ammo on post is a good deal, no sales tax. the guns prices and reloading prices are high.

You must be pretty hard to please.

I have to disagree about Bullseye. I went there almost weekly last fall, and the staff was always friendly, and the facilities reasonable. Every Tuesday was free for active military, they didn't charge extra for shooting my own ammo, and they didn't care that I took twice as much brass home as I shot. Their ammo prices are inflated, but so are everyone else's. My wife did prefer The Marksman over Bullseye, but I have no complaints about either. Range 15 is good for shooting distances with rifles, and I have no complaints about. The ammo prices on Ft Lewis prove that AAFES is a military sponsored racket. Their prices were almost always 25% more than Surplus Ammo and Arms was charging for the same product. The lack of sales tax does not make up for that. I saw S&B .380 at the PX for over 20, and steel case 7.62x39mm for 6-8.

Yes I am hard to please.
I comparsion shop for ammo. And I find Surplus ammo good for some and not so good for others. But I do not hestitate to recommend them. They are very knowledgeable especially when it comes to AR-15 builds.

Capitol Forest is pretty bad when you use the lower pit (also known as the suicide pit) off of Waddell Creek Road. If you go up C-Line to the upper quarry there is a much better shooting area at the top (7-8 mile drive uphill from Waddell). The upper quarry is separated into 4 large "bays" with great rock berm backstops.

Another nice part about the upper quarry that the lower pit doesn't provide is the ability to shoot with your vehicle and not have to pack in.

Also along C-line are tons of small roadside, or right off the road shooting areas for 1 or 2 vehicles. Better utilized for pistol work, most of these "sweet spots" don't have any distance over 50 yards or so.

If you HAVE to use the lower pit, then don't go on the weekends unless you prefer to be muzzle swept and in fear of your life. :scrutiny:

Hey man, I'm in U.P. and I go to Tacoma Rifle and Revolver Club. It does take a membership, but their facilities and ranges are nice. It is outdoors, but if that doesn't bother you, you're in luck. http://www.tacomarifle.org

Anyways, check them out, i really like it compared to bullseye, where there always seems to be what looks like thugs. Another thing that bothers me about bullseye is that they'll put someone in the lane next to you, when you're shooting pistol, they're shooting buckshot and you're recieving pellets in the face.

The marksman is nice if you can get a lane. Also, because the marksman and bullseye are indoors, 50yds is the furthest you can shoot. Whereas at tacoma rifle and revolver you can shoot out two 200 any day and 500 on certain days. Anyways, you might try them all and see what you like!

Regards, and welcome to the NW.
