I have to admit that I have had my CPL for over four years and have never carried. One of the reasons is I have never found a gun that appealed to me. I'm not impressed by the newer plastic models out now, plus I need an ambidextrous safety. The only automatics I own that fit my safety consideration are my CZ85 and a couple CZ82s. Everything else has the safety on the WRONG side.

I'm looking for a concealable metal gun, with a safety on the CORRECT side, preferably between .32ACP and 9mm.

Suggestions?

I'm a lefty and have the Ruger SR9c and SR40. Both have ambidextrous safety and mag release. They both have the same overall design and fit my hand and budget very well. I also have a Taurus PT709 that I carry concealed in my pocket holster. It isn't ambidextrous but due to the very long trigger pull, I carry it with safety off. I don't have a problem with "plastic lowers" and like the lower weight.

I'm a lefty, but I carry a pistol that doesn't need to be adapted, a Polish P-64. I carry it safety off (heavy trigger pull so it's not going to be pulled accidentally) and it has a heel mag release which is inherently ambidextrous. I can also shoot just as well with my right hand if need be. I normally carry cavalry-style (handle forwards) on my left side, and draw with my left hand.

Like WardenWolf, who advocated the P64, I am also advocating a pistol using the 9X18 Makarov cartridge (which fits your requirement that the caliber be between .32 and 9mm). The CZ-82 is a metal, concealable handgun with ambidextrous safety and magazine release. Comfortable in the hand, and accurate, it has a 12 shot double stack magazine, and it is reliable and sturdy. They can be had for about $275-$300. More recently manufactured versions, the CZ-83 in .380 can be had for a bit more.

As noted above, the CZ82 or 83 is probably your best bet, and economical to boot. Some Beretta 84 or 85's also had ambi safeties., but are only found used now. Moving up in power, S&W 3nd gen auto in 9mm and 40 often have ambi safeties, and are double action, but the safety is mounted on the slide.

As a lefty and very old school I carry a 1911 in 45 cal. I have learned to use my trigger finger to operate the safety just as fast. Did that for 21 years in the army. I than purchased a Sprinfield 1911 target with ambi works just as good.

Like you I am not into black polymer pistols but had to purchase a 9mm for my wife and she chose the Walther ppq. It is completely ambidextrous down to the mag release. I was totally surprised by Walther ppq and has made me reconsider my stand on "plastic" guns. It shoots flawlessly and out of the box the trigger pull is under 5lbs.

If you want totally left handgun check this guys out...it is pricey.

I'm a lefty. My daily carry is a Taurus 709 slim. I never actually use the external safety. The safe action trigger safety is enough.

My Smith and Wesson 469 has a slide mounted safety/ decocker. I only use it as a decocker. The DA trigger on the first shot is safety enough. Your best safety is located squarely between your ears, not on one side or the other of you gun.

My wife is a lefty. You should look into the FNX. They have ambidextrous controls, higher capacity, in the 3 most popular calibers (9mm, 40s&w, 45acp). I don't carry this one, it stays in the living area of my house. I needed to get a pistol that the wife and I could use without problem.

I'm a lefty.
I know you said you aren't impressed by polymer guns, but still, Glock 19 or M&P 9c would be great. You could also look at a Sig P229. No safety but the decocking lever is easily actuated with the left hand index finger.

When I'm in the woods I typically carry a large bore revolver, which is pretty much ambidextrous.

In social environments I carry a 1911. As a lefty I've gone through a ton of different ambi safety designs, and hands down the best I've ever used is the Wilson Combat Bulletproof ambi with tactical levers. It's incredibly solid, none of the right side wiggle you get with other ambi safeties. Most SIG 1911s come standard with it. I have them on all my 1911s.

As far as modern polymer, I'm a fan of the M&P series and the FNX series, both very lefty friendly in my opinion.

doesnt CZ make a completely ambidextrous CZ-75?.. since CZ-75s are one of my favorite handguns i would go with that if i was unfortunate enough to be both left handed and a gun enthusiest.. if im not mistaken, i think someone, somewhere out there makes completely ambidextrous 1911s.. left side ejection too

I've never heard of a 1911 which ejects to the left. The fully ambidextrous CZ you're thinking of is the CZ-85. Great gun and I see them going on Gunbroker for $550ish.

Problem is those pistols are full sized and might be hard to conceal. Check out the Walther PPQ M2. It has a polymer frame but is fully ambidextrous and has a sweet trigger.

I am a lefty, but is more the result of a probllem with my right eye rather than right hand coordination. As a result, I have taught my self to bring my hand gun up with my right hand, and sight with my left eye. It took some practice, but it solved the safety problem. With long guns, my gunsmith has been able to switch many of mine to left handed safety.

I am left handed but have adapted to the right hand world.

Try a revolver or any gun that can be safely carried without the safety on.

If you must have a safety - try a S&W 3rd Gen pistol like the 3913 or 6906 with an ambi safety.

The 3914 in this pic has an ambi safety:

Someone mentioned Glocks. Probably the best "compromise".

Someone else brought up the $6000 lefty 1911. Yea, that's good if your wealthy.

Here's two suggestions.

If you want a semi-auto, look around for a Randall. You can't find them cheap, but they are less than the $6000 1911.

If you aren't solely interested in a semi auto, take a look at Charter Arms "Southpaw". Heck they even make them in pink for lefty ladies.

Possibility- Walther P5. DA/SA, no manual safety to worry about, just a decocker. ejects to the left.

The only truly ambidextrous gun is the HK P7, and as a LH shooter, I love its accuracy and lack of buttons and levers - squeeze to cock then fire, release the cocking lever and instant safety. Even the mag release is ambidextrous; otherwise get a 1911 with the ambi safety, or a Glock (have them all myself) - all work fine for a leftie

One needs the PSP with heel mag release the ones sent new to america have magazine release on wrong side of the frame. Anyhow at this time it's lost cause because for same money or possibly less one can get second hand R9 which is state of the art for 9x19 defensive carry pistol.

I've been watching my LGS for a charter arms Southpaw. I won't buy a traditional wheel gun because I hate fumbling reloads. The only other revolver I would buy is a top break, but no one makes them anymore, and the ones you can still get are antiques that may KB with modern ammo.
