Hodgdon's site lists the following data for the 158-gr Hornady XTP bullet with Winchester-231 powder. Is this close enough to try with the Winchester 158-gr JHP?

158 GR. HDY XTP 158 231 .357" 1.580" 6.2 1108 33,700 CUP 6.9 1220 40,000 CUP

Does anyone else load this bullet with either Winchester-231 or Vihtavuori-340 powders? If you feel like posting some data, that would be great! :)

Whats the intended use of your load? W231 may not get you up into the velocity range you are looking for if you are looking to make a hunting or defensive load, but does make a good powder for plinking/target loads.

Good question, I should have had that information in the original post. The intended use is just for range fun and blasting away.

N340 is a good powder for "midrange" .357 loads. Very accurate and clean. IDriveB5 is right. W-231 won't get you a lot of velocity in the .357. It does work well for ".38 loads" in .357 cases.

HP-38 is another good powder for a mid-range plinking load. IIRC, HP-38 and W-231 are really the same powder.

6.0 grains of HP-38 over a 158 grain jacketed bullet with an OAL of 1.580 will put you in the 900 fps range out of a 4" barrel.
