Here's the deal- I've been approached by a company in the Gaithersburg/ Germantown area with a view to joining them. If everything works out it will be a fantastic career opportunity, and a chance to restart a career that's taken a nosedive here in Canada.

Now I know Maryland is not the most gun friendly state in the union, but having lived in South Africa, the United Kingdom and now Canada I am no stranger to daft gun laws. But what I'd like to know is how do MD gun laws affect shooting sports? I shoot skeet, sporting clays and F-class, and I'm just getting back into IPSC.

As far as I can tell my long guns won't cause any hassles, but what's the deal with pistols? I have a Ruger SR 1911, and my wife shoots CZ75 Omega- will they be MD compliant?

Any good clubs to look into in the Gaithersburg and Germantown area? Any other useful tips or pertinent information you can share?

Many thanks!

Howdy!

I've lived in MD during several periods of my life, and now live quite close. I used to say that MD's laws were dumb, but not all that onerous. As of the last couple of years, they've crossed the line completely. I'll have to leave others to explain the whole new situation now, as I've lost track a bit. Honestly, coming from Canada, you might not find them quite so much more stringent than what you're used to.

As for competition/clubs. There are a few. There are some really quite decent shotgun clubs very close to that area, or within reasonable driving distance.

There's not a lot of rifle competition that I know of in the suburban MD area, and IPSC/IDPA type clubs are somewhat limited, as well.

The VERY good news is that you'll be quite close to Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia and the shooting opportunities in those three states will give you more than you could hope to make time for! Here's just one very popular venue: http://peacemakernational.com/ Just over an hour away.

I do know plenty of people who choose to live in PA and commute to the Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville area (and a lot farther than that) but that's a huge time and gas commitment. Some of them shift their work schedules and leave home at 3:00 am to avoid the traffic rush. That's pretty extreme but some folks feel it's worth while.

A lot of folks I know live on the Virginia side and commute across Rt. 15 at Point of Rocks to the area you are asking about. Not always the best drive, but it's day and night concerning gun ownership.

Compared to what you've peen putting up with, MD will be tolerable. The real problems are in buying new guns, not what you already own. Go over to mdshooters.com and take a look. They can get you all the information you need.

Montgomery County MD (where those cities are located) is an extremely expensive place to live.

Look at the cost of rent and the sales prices of the homes in the area to get an idea of what I mean.

Hope the salary they're offering is enough.

We lived and worked in Maryland for 20+ years. We left for a couple of years and then returned to our former workplace....we decided to reside in Pennsylvania and commute. It's a long, tiring commute but worth it in our opinion to get away from the politics of the anti-gunners in Md.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated! I will look into living in VA or PA too. I'll be down there late July to meet up with thes folks, but if they make me a half decent offer I'll go for it.

Horrible gun laws, $$$$ to live, bad traffic, and not very pleasant people.

I tried hard to live out of state but I couldn't make the commute work with my job location.

It's a toss up, live close to work or spend another work week each month sitting in the car in traffic.

Try to see as much of it as you can when you're here. My Brother brings lots of new staff into the area and many of them don't stay. They can't take the people, traffic, and didn't understand how expensive it is. We hired one lady and she didn't stay through the training, I think she lasted a week and then went back to Michigan, couldn't take the traffic and the general area.

It is nearly impossible to get a carry permit in Maryland. Their last batch of gun laws were just plain stupid and un-necessary. If it is practical, I would live in an adjoining state (not NJ) and commute. But as far as the sport shooting goes, you won't really have any problems in Maryland. My sister lives in Maryland. She keeps telling me that she wants to move to VA because of the politics mostly.

PA is too far away for a reasonable commute to the Germantown/Gaithersburg area. Like Sam said, people do it, but the commute time from southern PA into that area would run about 1 1/2 hours. And worse in bad weather or if there is an accident along the route in.

Virginia is no better. There are only so many ways across the Potomac, and there's none just south of that part of Montgomery County. You'd be looking at Fairfax/Loudoun Counties. They rank 1st and 2nd in the nation for median household income in the entire nation. Cost of living there will be no better. And you're looking at an hour commute on a good day from northern Virginia.

Sir, you might not want to hear this, but where you're looking at relocating is among the most wealthy and affluent places in the country. I don't kinow what you think a half-decent offer is in your head. I can tell you the median household income in those counties is roughly around $100k.

The quality of life issues are more important than guns and stuff. So unless you get offers that place you in that range, you'll find yourself making what we'd consider decent money most anywhere else in the US doesn't go far enough there.

Actually Loudoun County was beat out last year and had to take second place to a small Virginia city inside the beltway. Seems that since the census considers this little city to be a county, it took number one in the nation. Falls Church Virginia had the highest household income in the nation.

Virginia gets five out of the top ten spots, or is it twelve. At any rate the DC metro area is pricey.

Very few places less friendly to shooters than MD. Come here, make money, and leave. Either daily, or part of a long term plan. Shooters are not the only demographic that either lives in another state or has plans to leave as soon as possible.
