So I'm in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area until Saturday morning, anything interesting for a gun nut to check out between now and then?

thanks,

PS i'm interviewing at Duke and UNC. Would they be good schools from the perspective of availiability of IPSC, 3gun, and Highpower matches?

Or good rifle ranges in same area?

I just moved to RTP myself, well a few months ago.

Been itch'en to good shooting.

Anyone recommend a good rifle range in the RTP area?

Welcome to the triangle.

"PS i'm interviewing at Duke and UNC. Would they be good schools from the perspective of availiability of IPSC, 3gun, and Highpower matches?"

I may have missed 'em but the only shooting sports available at Duke and UNC are restricted to shooting bullstuff. Durham County Wildlife and the Durham Pistol and Rifle Clubs are good local venues for shootgunning, IDPA, 3 gun, and IPSC shooting. Sir Walter in Raleigh (where else) is even better.

In my opinion, a trip to Cherry's Fine Guns in Greensboro would not be a wasted 30 minute drive were you so inclined. You can check their stock first on-line.

Best wishes and here's hoping you pick the right blue!

I don't actually care about school sponsored shooting, just good competition within a reasonable distance, which both schools seem to have in spades. Which is the "right blue"?

Rifle range: Wake County FETC.
Shop: PDHSC in Raleigh.

PM or e-mail or IM me, I can try showing you around some weekend.

The FETC as a range rocks. 50yd pistol bay, 50yd rifle bay, 100yd (maybe 200?) rifle bay. Anything goes, up to .50BMG. I dunno about .50+ hunting wildcats, but I suspect those would be OK too.

Wake FETC? I don't get it. $10-15 an hour... no matches, no long range, remind me why it's cool?

thanks,

Indoors and it allows high power?

There are other places around (mainly Sir Walter) which do matches and such. And for someone like me who's new to rifles and such, it's wonderful.

Durham Pistol and Rifle Club's closer to Durham & Chapel Hill than Raleigh, Sir Walter Raleigh is closer to Raleigh, oddly enough. Both host matchs, IIRC. DPRC definitely does, as I've not been able to shoot on match days once or twice (at least at the range that was in use.) I like Mace Sports for local purchasing. It's in Mebane. Semi-regular shows that are so-so at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh are another feature.
Personally, I'd choose to dwell in Wake County, as Durham is a PITA for handgun owners by comparison, regardless of where you choose for a school. (Durham is the only county with registration, it's an unrepealed Jim Crow law.)

I think I can handle a bit of nonsense what moving with moving from the PRK and all that.

Personal Defense and Handgun Safety is a a awesome gun store, the Tillys are good folk. They have an indoor range with rentals.

Durham is about an hour south of "The Range" in Oxford. Back in the late 90's they had GREAT IPDA matches, I'm sure they still do.

What are you interviewing for? As a Duke med grad, I can only recommend one choice :p

+1 for PDHSC, great place. Good prices, nice handgun range.

The Wake County range is good as a range, like Stiletto said, but the people who work there are very strange. If you don't like being stared constantly by the range officers while you're shooting, don't go there.

Davi's is the other big gun store around here, and is not worth visiting. The staff there, from my experiences, intentionally lie, and are all around :cuss:

The Personal Defense range is very cool. I used to shoot a couple hundred .45 rounds there every week.

You might want to check out Youngs in Apex, south of Raleigh. Great little gun store and always something interesting there.

I just finished my interview for Duke's School of Business. With any luck I'll join the MBA class of 2008.
