Sorry for the somewhat similar topic, but this is a little more specific.

Picked up this model...with any luck it's in stock. Getting a Slughunter in stock for a reasonable price has been a bit hard. I originally planned to go with a 3X9X40, but OpticsPlanet was out of stock, and I read comments saying that even a 2 power scope was more than enough and suggesting it's just a marketing push by scope companies to sell more scope than needed...anyway I settled on the 1.65 with the BDC. I really really like the Nikon Spot on Technology. I had a chance to play with the Android App of it and already found the Federal Sabots I like...even though they are still a bit uncommon to find in the wild.

Does anyone think I should just got for a more powered scope? Personally as a first time deer and bear hunter, I honestly don't want to take very long range shots. Of course I'm going to sight in and test the shotgun scope and slugs first, but I don't want to try long range shots until I feel a proficiency that I can make ethical shots. I'm thinking my range will be up to 100 yards at the moment.

Just wondering if any Nikon owners had any feedback or comments on their scopes or others just on the amount of scope needed.

I think you did just right. I have the 1.65 X 5 and really like it. IMHO most folks are over-scoped, at least for woods hunting.
