I am thinking of installing the above linked scope on my cantilever barrel 20 gauge Mossberg 500 rifled barrel for the northeast whitetail woods where shots are usually fairly close. It is a 1.75 to 5 x 32 mm objective with eye relief of 3.5-3.7".

Is this enough eye relief for a 20 gauge that has a LimbSaver pad on the stock? Don't want to tattoo my face...Alternatively I have heard that the long 5" eye relief models (like the leupold vx-1 and Nikon slug scopes) may not even be able to be properly installed on a cantilever barrel. I have no idea if this is true as I've never scoped a cantilevered barrel.

Thanks for any input!

If you can make a shot out to 150 to 175 yards with your shotgun then for me a 5power scope is not enough for well placed shots . Personally I would rather have a 2-7 or 3-9 scope on a 20ga shotgun. The few 20ga slugs I have shot don't kick any harder than a average 3006 to me. My 12ga mossy 500 has cantilever barrel and a 3-9 burris fullfield on in with 3 1/2" average of eye relief and its fine . No fancy recoil pad. Its practical to make a 200 yard shot and seeing your aim point on target clearly is everything to me yet I have shot deer walking by the tree stand.

The cantilevered barrel sets the scope were it would normaly set on any long gun. You don't have to use all 5" of relief as it can be moved around with in the rings and on the mount but its nice to have the option. I like the info on the nikon 3-9 slug hunter.

I have 2.5 x 8's on my Ithaca 12ga Deerslayers. I don't remember what the eye relief is and the ones I have are out of production, and I can't find the specs at this time.

However, they are not "extended eye relief" models, but they do have eye relief in the 3.5 inch range.

During all of my hunting in the woods, I kept them on their lowest setting and had no issues.

I think scopes in that general power range are pretty good for deer hunting based on my personal experience.

Only one time did I get myself with the scope and that was not because of a lack of eye relief. I simply was not positioned correctly when I fired. My son and I were sitting against a tree eating lunch and a deer walked up to within 25 ft of us and I didn't have time to get properly positioned on the gun.
