Some recommendations :

Walther P-4
Walther p-5
FN Hi-Power Double Action
Browning BDM
Armilite AR-24

What Nullcone listed: Walther P5, SIG P6, H&K P7.

For something from quite a few years back: MAB PA-15.

How about that new RIA 9mm/22TCM combo 1911.

It's a high capacity (18 rds) 9mm 1911, which is not a terribly common pistol in an of itself, but the package also includes a barrel in the new 22 TCM caliber.

Otherwise I'd second the Caracal, It's new enough to still be quite rare, but the reports that are out there seem very favorable. Also, its available at Centerfire Systems for $399 shipped.

My vote is for the H&K P7 also. They can be found pretty easily in good condition and are typically under $700.

I'm the OP here. The H&K P7 has been mentioned numerous times. I'm interested. But the one in my LGS is $899. CDN had them a few years ago at a real reasonable price and I was on the phone to order, but they won't ship to Maryland, so that was the end of deal. I could look again.

I had a friend of mine recently (8 months ago) buy a chromed P7 for $600 on Gunbroker. Obviously local prices vary but the internet can yield some good deals.

Avoid the Firestar. It's junk. So is the Diamondback DB9.

YMMV
Avoid the Firestar.It's junk.
Im not sure if you are talking about later production models, but i have a m-43 firestar.
i traded it a few months ago for a S&W 4506-1.
after 2 months of it eating away at me,i traded back and got my M-43 back.
it's one of the best, most dependable handguns i've ever owned.
a tad on the heavy side, but MUCH easyer to carry than the 4506-1.
definatly not junk IMHO!

I'll put in my vote for a Walther P5 or P5c. Also for consideration you might look for an Inglis HP with a shoulder stock. I own all of the above plus a few others. They are all good. Have fun hunting the prize.

Cheers,

ts

Republic Arms 401 9mm, offers cocked and locked plus a decocker and one of the smoothest triggers I have ever encountered.

Astra A-75

South African Tressitu TZ-99

Croatian PHP 9mm - Evolved Walther P38, made for the Croatian military, double stack 9mm available pretty cheap.

Exactly what I would've suggested. I have all four of those and they are very cool. You could also see if you could locate a S&W 3906, Benelli B76, Polish M95, or a Beretta 951.

TZ99. It's a South African version of the CZ99 Scorpion and the Golan. Resembles the Walther P-99 and Sig 229.

South Korean?

Maybe a Daewoo? Don't be scared by their cars, the guns are very well made. Mine has had lots of use and still shoots great.

Of course, many Suzuki cars were actually rebranded Daewoos. By the way, Don lives in the one of the very few cities in America that happen to be a palindrome. I drive through multiple times a year. Highway 98 also goes through my town.

I always liked the EAA Witness 9mm polymer with the .22lr conversion slide but I've heard that EAA customer service sucks...

The gun on the other hand is quite cool and based on the CZ 75 (IMHO it looks even better)

Witness P S. They are built on the small frame and there's a bunch out there for around $300. I got one to go with my Match. Not quite as accurate but no slouch either.

What about an STI Spartan in 9mm? Great starter level 1911-style gun and in 9mm, it's affordable to shoot. STI is a Texas-based company with amazing customer service. And it is less than $700.............

You can find pre-owned P7's or PSP's (not P7M8's) for around $700. Just gotta keep looking. And they are keepers. You will get very attached to their design and likely seek a few more.

However if you really seek rare and obscure, and H&K P9(s) can be had near the $700 mark. Totally beautiful and addictive as well.
