A couple of other points

I bought lots of Federal XM193 over the last 18 months. As I fire it, I reload it. So yes, I bought the brass, but it contained live rounds. The if I load it five or seven more times, my brass cost is essentially zero.

Second, I use an RCBS X-die. I have to trim once only and brass stays a safe length for the life of the case.

But the real bottom line is that I like to reload my own ammo. I like the fact that I can make anything I want, and if the gunshop's closed, no matter. Kinda the same reason I like to tie my own flies.

a tuned handload for your rifle...priceless .I don't plink
In general, I agree with this. But I've got six (6) rifles chambered in 223. You wanna volunteer to load tuned ammo for each of 'em? :D

I've got a couple of 223 rifles but only handload for the accurate one :D . The other one gets cheapest fodder available.

costs

I enjoy 223 reloading - I use hitech bullets @ 31, accurate data powder, cheapest primers, scrounged brass, and a lee factory crimp die. My stuff costs around a dime a round. I don't marathon reload and use a hornady progressive. Accuracy is good, better than some of the ball I shoot. Its a hobby not a business and a lot of folks forget that reloading doesn't have to be a chore.

"...load tuned ammo for each..." That'd be the first thing I do for any new rifle. Work up a load. Factory or milsurp doesn't cut it for accuracy. I don't use any factory ammo.
Mind you, I'm more interested in the rifle than the cartrdige. I've got a No.1 Mk III and a No. 4 Lee-Enfield I don't load for as I don't shoot either enough to bother working up a load but I did for the M-1 and '03A4. Moreso for the 'A4 with match grade bullets. Don't load many of them due to the cost of the bullets. Nearly $400 per 1,000 up here.
You will find that the accuracy of all your .223's will improve if you work up a load for each.
