Hey guys,
I am in the research phase right now with regard to buying an FAL (SA58 Standard most likely). Which "cost-effective" .308 ammo would you suggest I feed it? Prices on South African surplus and NEW Sellier and Bellot are close and both are cheap. I wont be competition shooting and 200 yards will probably be my max distance. I've had good performance with S&B pistol ammo in .45 cal and 9mm.

What's your pick? Any others I should be considering that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

Thanks,

I've shot about 500 rnds of the SA stuff through my M1A and it was pretty accurate hitting clay pigeon targets at 200 yrds. I didn't try the S&B 308 as I didn't have good luck using their 9mm stuff in my Sig 229.

I had a problem with SA ammo in an FAL clone not extracting due to soft cases. I had to polish the chamber, after which it worked OK, but I had not had a problem with any other ammo in that rifle.

best deal at the moment

sportsmansguide.com has 500 rd lots of new production Federal M80 ball from some over run that's even cheaper than wolf right now, and only a little more than Argentinian 80's surplus.

product number WX2-88674. it's marked 'for training only' but i think that's just for the over run thing. it's still M80 147 gr ball with muzzle vel of 2750 fps.

edit to add the important thing: 500 rounds for $109.
