I found a store that has a german made p228 for $500. There is some wear on the slide but other than that it's in pretty good shape. The only thing thats holding me back is that being a lefty when i hold a sig my trigger finger lays on top of the mag release, and i can push it in with my finger on the trigger if i try. does anybody else have this problem or know of any ways around it? Can the mag release be switched to left-handed?

I'm a lefty. None of my guns have ambi-anything. I've just accepted the fact that the majority of gun made are right handed. I learned to shoot a rifle right handed so that's not a problem....But that made me right eye dominant....So it's odd to watch me shoot a pistol....I shoot handguns left handed....I'm all messed up but I can shoot pretty well....

The reason you mention is the exact reason why I sold my G30....it was a great, accurate, and reliable pistol....but I couldn't handle the mag release digging into the pad of my palm at the base of my trigger finger under recoil...You might be inclined to shoot it before you buy it if possible....this could be a problem.

Actually i find most mag releases are easier to use lefty with the trigger finger than they are righty with the thumb. It's just that with the sig i'm worried that i can accidentally drop the mag, especially since the sig mag release is a lot easier to push in than the one on a glock.

Can't speak to the Sig, but I sold a kel tec PF9 this summer, after spending 6 or 7 months hunting it, because I kept bumping the mag release in a pocket holster. Having lots of back-up firepower doesn't do a wad of good if the mag falls out when drawing -- or worse, the slightly released mag snags when trying to draw!

I've not had a problem ever hitting a mag release when shooting. I've fired Taurus PT92, Smith M&P, the Kel Tec (no problem while shooting), Browning Buckmark, 1911s, CZ 75 and 85, Sig 250 and a few others. Never hit the mag release.

FWIW, when I drop a mag, I actually elevate the trigger finger away from the gun frame and use my middle ("bird") finger to hit the mag release. I use my trigger finger to hit the slide release on the way back down to the trigger area.

i actually got out a couple of my Sigs to try this before posting

many of the students who attend our classes a rightys, but they switch the mag release over to the right side so they don't have to rotate the gun to reah the mag release. we've never had a student drop a mag during a class and we get going pretty fast and furious.

1. when you'r trigger finger is on it's "safety spot/safety index" it should be on the frame above the trigger. that should put the mag release between you index finger and middle finger.

2. when your finger is on the trigger, it is in-line with the mag release, but it should be clearing it by quite a bit. if your finger is resting on the mag release:
a. you're using too much finger on the trigger
b. you have thicker fingers than most folks

the mag release is switchable to the other side of the gun. you can do it, but i'd recommend you get the disassembly DVD before starting. if you do it wrong, you'll have to send it to the factory (on your dime) to have it cleared...or you could have a gunsmith do it

I haven't dropped the mag by accident but i can if i try to do it, just makes me a little worried. I'm trying to decide between the p228 and an fnp-9, another downside with the sig is it only comes with one 10 round mag, compared to the fnp's three 16 rounders.

i can't really address your fears...after all they are yours...all i can say is that i've been to serveral classes and never seen it happen.

i wouldn't buy that 228 with just one mag.

Sigs are suppose to come with 2, except for a short period when there was a shortage and they were shipping with one....but i don't think that applied to the 228

you don't give a location, why would they only have a 10 round mag when the FN has a 16 rounder

I'm assuming it's probably one of the imported police trade-ins, some of which have 10 round mags.

Yes, you can change the mag release to the right side of the gun but I wouldn't...I carried a P226 in the normal configuration until I changed to the Southpaw way...found not only that I preferred the mag button back on the left side of the pistol and using the trigger finger to release the mag (it feels awkward for a bit and then it will feel normal) but I encountered a bigger problem...many holsters are not mirror finished for Southpaws...the inside of my holster closest to the body would at times trip the mag catch...lovely...that ended me having the mag catch button on the right side of the pistol...good luck with your choice...if you do change it, make sure whomever does it knows what they're doing 'cuz if that spring catch is put into the frame the wrong way (easy to do) the frame will have to be drilled to get it back out...

I'm left-handed. I have a Sig 220, a 239, and a 229 in .22LR. My mag release is on the left side of each gun. I have fired about 13,000 rounds through all three guns, and I have never accidentally released the magazine.

The placement of the slide release and the decocker could be better for a left-hander. I slingshot the slide release, and the decocker isn't that hard to use, given how and when the decocker is used.

I just took the Sig Armorer pistol course and you can switch the mag release button but you should have it done by an armorer as the spring is VERY small, and youu need a very small tool to remove the pin. If installed in correctly you can damage the frame. Sig would sell you a new gun because the frame is one piece.
