Any problems with recent Glock 19s?

That's good advice, BrokenArrow.

Thanks to everybody for their input. I like the Glock a lot.

Finally, a range report...

Hi folks,

As promised, here's a brief range report of my G-series Glock 19. Please note that I am a novice pistol shooter – probably less than 1500 rounds total. The only formal training I’ve had is the FAS-1 class at the Firearms Academy of Seattle. I have shot 3 pistols in my life – a Smith & Wesson Model 17 .22 revolver, a Walther P99, and my Glock 19.

This pistol itself is a bit blocky and I have to rotate my grip to release the magazine. The grip is kind of slick when my hand is sweaty, so I may invest in a rubber sock. Nevertheless, it points well, and I like the sights. I don’t care for the mushy trigger, but it’s usable. Needless to say, it’s ugly beyond all comprehension…

After some limited progress in the trigger control area (follow-through and avoiding “milking†by tightening my weak hand grip) I find I can put pretty much everything in a 4 inch circle at 7 yards – I realize this is not impressive – that’s why there are no targets.

Now, onto the actual performance – to make a long story short, I’ve had no failures in 600 rounds. I’ve shot roughly equal numbers of American Eagle 124 FMJ, Winchester White Box 115g FMJ, Winchester White Box 115g JHP and Georgia Arms 124g +P Gold Dots. Some of the ejected cases (always from the 124 grain loads) have had small dents where the case is apparently hitting the ejection port on the way out and are ever so slightly out of round. Though Glock customer service claims this is normal, it seems a bit odd to me.

I have also observed something like the so-called “last round nose dive.†When I load a single, non-FMJ cartridge into either of my magazines, and cycle the slide by hand, the cartridge jams on the bottom of the feed ramp (it also pushes the bullet deeper into the case). This has happened every time I’ve tried it with both Winchester JHP and Georgia Arms Gold Dots.

Happily, when recoil cycles the slide, I have had no failures. To test this, I fired 20 magazines loaded with 2 cartridges each. I fired one-handed (with both my strong and weak hands) and observed no failures (except failure to hit where I was aiming left handed - yikes!). Looking at the markings on the feed ramp after shooting, it’s clear that the hollow point bullets are engaging it near the bottom. In the P99 I shot, I saw these same markings near the middle of the feed ramp. I have requested new followers from Glock, though this will force me to retest my defense ammo.

On the whole, I’m satisfied with the pistol. The magazine follower issue is somewhat disturbing. Frankly, looking at the design with a layman’s eyes, I’m not at all surprised that there are “nose-dives†– the large, asymmetric, bump near the rear of the follower just doesn’t make any sense to me. Hopefully, new followers will cause the last round to engage the feed ramp closer to the middle.

Thanks for listening! Note that I've also posted this on Glock Talk.

Why the "3" followers? Aren't the newest the "5" followers? That's what was in my new G19 mags. Hard to keep up w Glock; those guys take the CIP (continuous improvement process) to the max...

Guess it wasn't really "perfection" the first time? ;)
