I have a few and use most all of the Randalls that I own. Not only are they highly collectable, but a damn fine knife. I've been using one since 1967. My "go to" is a Model #5-5" but I am currently carrying a really nice #19-5" stainless, stag handle, finger grips, compass and wrist thong. It's a dandy. Lets hear what you all have-

Pap,

We have several Randall owners here (some with very impressive collections). If you search this forum using "Randall" as the term you'll see most of them.

I have a "couple" and focus my collecting on other areas.

I grew up down the road from their workshop out in the orange groves. We used to ride bikes up there and watch them or explore the collection they had on site.

Years later I bought one and carried it to the war a couple of times, I now have two of them and they are wonderful.

I have had a Mod 14 for 23 years and the Mod 26 is 11 years old.I have had a Mod 8 and a 5 inch Mod 3 for a couple of years now.All were new when bought but are well used now and like Dish Boggett's horse "they ain't for sale".

I have a few Randall's, but tend to concentrate on other blades now. If I am going to wait that long for a knife on order, I would rather buy a true custom.

HSO

Neat article, but when it went to press he had an employee named Bud Keneon, his first. Unfortunately Bud decided he had to be more active in the war effort ( Bo supposedly told him that his work helping make Randall Made knives was a pretty good war effort) and joined the Navy. On a car trip to Orlando on a pass he died in an auto acceident.

Excellent Lonesome Dove reference!

For a long time, I could never see the big deal about Randall knives. Then I held one. Opinions change!

If you contact one of the few real Randall Dealers, you can sometimes get a custom ordered Randall in less time than a regular citizen making an order. Ebay is still an option, and I have obtained a couple of nicely optioned Randalls for a reasonable price. A good Randall site is: http://www.knifetalkforums.com if you want to lurk.

I have 8 Randall's currently. That number fluctuates as I do sell sometimes to afford other toys I want. I do find a way to replace most Randall's I sell. Have 1 one order for delivery in 2014. That is a long wait. just finished waiting for a 1-8 and a 2-8. I had one of each and sold them to finance truck parts and something else I don't recall. Ordered replacements almost immediately and endured a 48 month wait.

I have a first run #1, #4 and #8..... always looking for more #1's. I carried mine to D-Storm in 1991, never had to use it in combat as things were usually settled with the M4 or M9. It did however give me peace of mind knowing I had it on me and could depend on it if I needed to. It did come in handy when we received a goat from a shepard that gaves us one for helping him out of a bad guy scene. We ate that goat that night, first fresh meat we had in 4 months, then Poof, war was over.

The Randall #1 I purchased for $121.66 Oct 1979. Obviously the price has gone up.

The #14 with the Border Patrol handle cost me $291. in 1996.

Both are fine knives.

A Trio of Randall's

Here is a photo of my two. A #1 All Purpose that I carried with me in the Army since 1978 and a newer Model 8 "Trout & Bird" that is just a super little knife and my companion on many a hunting trip. Both are working knives but hold up well, keep a nice edge and soldier on. My wife is in Afghanistan currently (USN) and she has a Model 15 Airman. I have nothing but good things to say about these knives and the folks who made them, they are simply the best and true patriots. When I got my #1 in 1978, it came with a nice signed letter from W.D. "BO" Randall himself, congratulating me on my Commission in the Army and wishing me well with "His" knife (the #1). When my wife got her deployment orders this spring, we learned that Randall will give active duty soldiers priority on a knife. She ordered herself a Model 15 and got it just prior to deploying and is now carrying it all over Afghanistan. It looks almost as good as her in the photos.:D

Here is my latest Randall, a Cattleman's with Stainless Steel blade, nickle-silver reduced hilt, aluminum/black spacers, nickle-silver butt, and wrist thong. The stag handle is fantastic and is a standard feature. I think it's a pretty cool setup and quite unusual. This Cattlemans model is really a neat little knife, and my older one I carry most times just because it is so small. Comes with a "pouch" sheath.

Here's a couple of pictures of the "standard" Randall Cattleman's with options of stainless steel blade, wrist thong with standard pouch sheath, and my new custom optioned Cattleman's with a Sullivan's custom beavertail/medalion pouch sheath. Pretty nice setup IMHO.

Nice Randalls Slamfire. Savage and Pappy. These are the Randall knives that I have collected and used over the years. Clockwise from the top is a Model 15 "Airman," which was a replacement for a Model 1 that "mysteriously" went missing during a night jump years ago. I had to dye the sheath black because my CO said I could wear it if I "subdued" the sheath. Next is a Model 27 that has been posted before. It is a safe queen so far. I have not had the opportunity to take it out and try it yet. I plan to use it for camping and other outdoor pursuits. The little guy on the bottom was picked up for me by my MIL at the Randall shop. I am not sure what model it is but it resembles the #21 in the catalog. All my other Randalls have the model number stamped on the back of the sheath. This one only has "DS" stamped on it. My 8-year old has commandeered the knife and wears it when we go squirrel hunting. The last one is a Model 23. I have used it to dress out and skin every deer I have shot in the past 22 years without a wimper. As you can tell from the photo I have an affinity for stag. If I could have ordered the #15 with a stag handle I would have!

I've got one, I don't know the specs or anything, my dad got it back in his army days, and i found it in the attic one day, so i took it and cleaned it up, it is by far the best knife i have.

For me, one of the coolest Randall's I own is the Jack Crider Special which looks sort of like a steak knife with a partial sharpened top edge. It is an adaptation of the Model 10 which is the "Salt Fisherman and Household Utility" knife. Jack Crider was (or is) a large Randall dealer and Randall would do special editions for their dealers. I bought it in 1990 from of course Jack Crider at the Blade Show when it was still held in Knoxville TN versus the Atlanta GA. My brother in law had one and once I saw it, I knew I "had" to have one.

I have 2 Jack Crider Specials, a 5" and a 7", and you are right, the Crider is one cool knife. Sadly, Crider is no longer with us and no more Crider Specials, so if you want one, better be on the lookout for one cause they ain't being made any longer.

I was in Orlando a little over 2 years ago and made a special trip to Randall to order my #5. I got several options including a maple handle and nickle hilt + some other stuff. I have a little bit of a wait still but I might order another one so that my next wait doesn't feel as long.

If you go through one of the few Randall dealers, like [email protected] , then your wait is usually less than a year. That's what I do. Also, my second Randall was the Bradford Angier Model #5-5" that I have used steady since 1975; it's the best all around knife I have ever had. Their new Model #28 Woodsman is a realy dandy as well, especially with it's high-rise sheath.

My heavily optioned Randall Model 27 is my all time favorite.

Stainless steel blade
Stag handle
Nickel-silver hilt
Nickel-silver butt plate
13 spacers (red, aluminum, red, white, maroon Micarta (thick), black, brass, black, maroon Micarta (thick), white, red, aluminum, and red)
Thumb notches
Brown sheath
