I have purchased three Hattori knives without sheaths, two of which are non-catalogued -- that is, Mr. Hattori is building to my specifications.

The knife I expect Japan Post sometime this week is a KD30-2A. Its overall pattern is copied from (my words, not Mr. Hattori's) Randall's Model 5. My knives use Hattori's Cowry X stainless Damascus (Cowry X layered with AISI 420). Graphic is of their blind tang version. I bought the stag w/Duralumin cap version. I believe it will be more durable assembly. Middle knife is hidden tang version of my purchase.

Regardless what advertising hyperbole is, Cowry X is no more stainless than is D2. . . . Finally, I get to the query.

I want a leather sheath with a non-reactive liner. I want the sheath to be a pouch with a retainer that retains via interfering with the hilt. The retainer is to be engaged and disengaged with knife hand. And the retainer is to be positioned that the knife edge will not cut it. Randall's Model 25-5 has a pouch sheath with a snap fastener that appears to be close to what is needed, albeit without liner.

I received my Hattori KD30-2A this afternoon. No graphic has given this knife its due. While it is a close copy of Randall's Model 5, it is superior in precision of manufacture, in detail assembly -- in every respect save one. Hattori included a sheath anyway. And it is as I expected -- bland. The knife deserves better.

For anyone interested in buying a production knife that is superior to any custom knife I have handled -- there are probably several custom makers who do comparable quality knives, I just haven't seen their work -- the best price I found is from Jemmy Iwahara "Kencrest" <[email protected]>. Quality of service, quality of his personal advice is excellent.

My built-to-order knives are somewhere along the paper process. I'm going to rethink my decision. I may just acquire a KD30-1A and KD30-104. Tough choices are a-comin'!
