I'm about 1hr from the NY-PA border. I'm currently in the 6 month waiting process for my CCW. I'd like to rent some handguns and try them out so when I get my CCW I know what to get. Unfortunately I can't even hold a pistol in NY without a permit, let alone shoot one.

Is it possible for a 26 y/o from NY to go to PA and rent a handgun without a license for target practice? If so, anyone know of any places not too far from NY?

Yes, I believe there is a Range in Bristol that rents. It is north of Philly. I do not know the name but one of my workers goes there to shoot.

If you'd like to travel a bit to get full auto trigger time

I recommend Targetmasters (www.targetmaster.com) if you're willing to travel South of Philly.

They have a decent range and a good rental selection. They rent fully automatic longarms if you want to have a little fun after you try a handgun or two.

I tried the MP5 and had a great time, kept the target as a souvenir.

I 2nd Targetmaster - real close to the Rt 1 and 202 intersection, and not far from Northern DE where I live.

They're pretty nice in there to deal with - might be heading there tonight to rent a couple to see what I like...

i'm bad with geography, but if you're anywhere near this place, it is absolutely fantastic. great staff, great instructors, i took my "nra first steps pistol orientation" class there, the guy who taught it was a cop, good times. highly recommended.

The Firing Line, 5581 Roosevelt Street, Whitehall, PA 18052. Phone: 1.610.262.7751 This is the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Officers Association firing range.

They're located in the vicinity of Allentown, PA, just off State Route #145. (MacArthur Road) It's an indoor range and extends to 16 1/2 yards. (50 feet) The range is open to the public; and, they have a large selection of handguns available for rent. Phone first to check the range hours before driving out.

And I can do all of this without a NY or PA pistol permit? Oh and to answer the question about which county in NY makes you wait 6 months for a permit... the answer is "all of them".

You can at The Firing Line. About all you'll need is a driver's license or state ID card.

(And, of course, money because renting range pistols can be expensive!)

If you're close to the NE PA area, you have both Sunset Hill and The Firing Line which have already been mentioned. In addition in Stroudsburg there's the Pocono Pistol Club which is a few months old and state of the art for an indoor range.
