I'm looking for ranges near NY that will rent and/or provide handgun training courses. Shore Shot Pistol Range in NJ is looking good but I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend anywhere from personal experience. This training would be for both myself and my girlfriend, neither of us has our handgun permit yet nor have we handled a firearm before.
We're planning a weekend trip so I'd say between 300 and 400 miles out of the Lake George area isn't an unreasonable travel distance, about a 6 hour trip one way would be acceptable. We'll be moving within a month so we'll be in the Lake George area then, this has the unfortunate side effect of restarting the year long handgun permit waiting period.

You can't handle a handgun in NY without a pistol permit, so rental or training without a permit is out of the question.

No it does not! If you've already applied, you can get the permit in your county of application whether or not you move. You can contact them and give them your new address, even if it's out-of-county. My wife did exactly that.

Also, New York State mandates that they give you a response, whether yay or nay, after six months. If it's been that long, I would give them a call. I know of several cases where the pistol permit was approved, but the clerks "forgot to mail it out to you"

We haven't lived in this county long enough to start the paperwork, only lived in Port Henry for 7 months.

Smith and Wesson in Mass... a bit more than 2 hours from Lake George.
Not bad looking, but their First Shots class is only on Monday nights. We need weekend hours.
