I picked up a military Roller at a gun show in Louisville this weekend, and I'd appreciate any info or solid steers towards detailed info.

I'd like to figure out what country bought the rifle.

It appears to be chambered in .43 Spanish.

It has Remington's three line address and patent info on the tang. Last patent date is March 16th 1874

It has a "B" stamped on the left side of the barrel near the receiver.

It does not have the Argentine octagon barrel section near the breech

And here is the kicker. The rear sight is a typical military, step adjustable/long ranger slider type sight, BUT instead of a "V" notch, open rear sight blade, it has an aperture rear sight.

Not a very user friendly arrangement. With that aperture about a foot forward of your eyeball, it is not fun to use.

Any ideas?

There were four different 43 Spanish cartridges. A short carbine length cartridge, a 433 bullet cartridge, a 439 Bullet cartridge and the 454 bullet model known as the 43 Reformado.

Over the years I have had almost 100 rollers. Remingtons went through several variations and were sometimes modified in foreign arsenals. Even some built under lIcense in foreign armories. In addition there were the Whitney rollers.

Just in the black powder number 1;s there were different stock to action shapes, different extractors, different types if hammers, indicators. I even have an Oviedo made roller with a rear sight that has a v notch way over on the left, as an extension of the rear sight. It is to be used in conjunction a front sight that is incorporated on the left side of the forward barrel band.

I have loaded many 43 Spanish (the 439 bullet) and the head spaces on many are slightly off. It will blow the case apart at the body or bottle neck.

This is not a Reformado. It is definitely .43 Spanish. I've had several .43 Spanish guns in the past and my dummy shells fit this gun perfectly. The bore is .439, not .454.

I was hoping to get some info on which country used this aperture sight.
