Any rifles close to the price of a Yugo SKS?

Scour your local gunshops and you are bound to find a bargain on an old mil-surp of some form. I routinely find enfields around my way in the rang of $100.

Mausers in a few models

the 48 and 48A's for instance and they just happen to be Yugos as well. The mosins of course. I've seen used Glenfield lever action 30-30's for just a hair over $100. Those Saiga's look very tempting, I haven't heard anything really negative about them. But man are they ugly. If they made one in 7.62X54R you couldn't keep me away from them tho'.

If you're limiting yourself to semi-auto, with the reliability and price range of the SKS, then you're not going to find much worth buying other than another SKS. But I have six of them so I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I thank you all for your suggestions.

However, I do not like bolt-action guns, so don't add them to your suggestions.

Considering you live in California, there ain't much else. There are no semi-auto centerfire rifles as cheap as the SKS, that are California legal.

How can you not like bolt actions?

Oh well, to each his own. That leaves more Mosins/Mausers/K31s/Enfields/Finns for the rest of us. :D

Kenshin, the Saiga Sporter 7.62x39 goes for around $160 here in Southwest Louisiana, while an SKS in excellent condition runs around $180 at the local gun shops. While I do not own a Saiga, I have a friend and shooting buddy who does. He's pretty satisfied with it. Hope this helps.

I have a Saiga (7.62 with a 16 inch barrel) which I am happy with. I still like my SKS rifles though. Both are excellent values.

The Saigas are about as expensive as a good SKS, but the SKS balances and shoulders much better, and in general is much more ergonomic to use. Unless hi-caps are a real necessity, I wouldn't feel the need to move from the SKS platform to the AK platform.

The Keltec SU-16 (5.56mm, uses AR mags, folds in half) is $500.. nothing else CA legal comes close.

Either that, or lever actions.

Alright, this might not be in the same boat as bolt guns, but it might be. A good lever-action rifle is very quick to operate and very inexpensive as well.

I'd save and get the SU-16 if you only could have "one" rifle in CA - think how much you will spend on ammo before going cheap.

Roscoe, which feature(s) on the Saiga are illegal in CA.?

The Saiga is listed by name on the "assault weapon" list in California because, iirc, it is built on an AK action (and all AK and variants are banned in CA by the Roberti-Roos act).

Hard to go wrong with a Marlin or Winchester. I'd go 30-30 myslef, but if you're talking about short range shooting a 44 mag or 45 colt may be just the ticket.

Marlin 336 is a stiffer action than the Winchester and often goes for less money. However, the Winchester 94 is also quite a good rifle. BUT, here's my recommendation...

Look for a Marlin 336, OR a Western Auto Revelation Model 200-2550 or a Western Field Model 33, which are both a 336. The Store Brand rifles are equal quality but generally go for lower prices than the Name Brands. Though, I must admit that I got a really nice 336 for $180. I've heard that a Western Field or Revelation can be had for $125-$140, both lower than a good Yugo SKS, more accurate, and less likely to scare the neighbors (even though I really like the SKS, personally).
