Cult of 1858

Ok, you guys and gals on here may be able to answer something that's been nagging me for a while.
My neighbors dad has a neat looking revolver. It looks like an 1858 Remington, BUT... it has NO markings on it at all. The story is that his grandaddy aquired it 'south of the border' when he was working cattle back in the 1860's.
I have done a little research, found things like, look at the point where the barrel screws into the frame, and check the screws, etc.
This gun hasn't got a 'step' up from the barrel to the frame like my Pietta's have. The difference look less than 1/16th". I have no access to the screws as the piece is in a display box on the wall and NO-ONE is allowed to touch grandaddy's revolver!
I will try and get a pic, but here's the best description i can put together.
The barrel is a much deeper shade than I have seen an any Remmie. It's almost deep satin black with shades of deep purple/brown. No markings on the barrel at all. Loading lever same color as barrel.
The frame is more of a deep grey than black or blue and has a shine on it that makes it look almost lacquered, although i think that's part of the 'its behind glass' problem. 44 is stamped under the frame at the front. The grips are of a real tight grained wood, again almost black. All screws seem to be in place, and in the right place. Cylinder shows a little spotting, and is more a deep plum brown than black. Nipple recesses are a little wider than on my Pietta and look almost flared at the top. Nipples are beat but look functional. The metal on the nipples looks like its soft as the nipples have mushroomed at the top.
I can only see the left hand side of the revolver, so there may be markings on the other side.
I have heard of Mexican made Colt copies, but has anyone heard of a Mexican 1858
