Anyone with experience with this gun/caliber.

I picked up a new to me 5" SW 460 Mag. It is supposed to have 2 compensator one for jacketed one for lead. I only have the jacketed one. The seller is going to send be the other when he finds it.

As I am not set up for 460 Mag yet, but i can shoot 45 Colt and load those I am wondering about the new Hi Tech coated bullets. I have those for the 45 Colt.

Can I use them with this "jacketed" compensator? And will these bullets hold up to Ruger 45 Colt loads and the higher faster 460 Mag loads??.

The difference in the compensator is the shape of the holes. I do not know enough about them to see how it makes a big difference. They are removable for cleaning.

If the coated bullets do not lead, then I am thinking the jacketed compensator should be OK. But could be wrong. What is going to happen, the holes get leaded up maybe?? I certainly will not shoot it a lot until I get some 460 dies and the other compensator.

Thanks

I've got the XVR 460 with 7 3/8" barrel. All I use is cast and the cast compensator has been on just about since I bought it.
I was always going to call S&W and ask them what the 2 different compensators are all about, but never got around to it.

What bullet/brand are you using?

A Lee 452-300 GC is a favorite, also used a lot of a 300grn FP PB by Laser Cast.
Few different Lyman molds on hand, usually cast all with Lyman #2 alloy mixed up.

Thanks I buy most my bullets from MBC but was thinking of the Laser Cast, They are harder and may stay together better? don't know. If not I can melt all that Silver out of them!:D

I sent a e mail to Donnie at Bayou bullets and MBC to see if the Hi Tech coated can go the high velocity.

I lile gas checked bullets for something like the S&W460.
Haven't put all that many rounds through mine really tell the difference.
Wish one of the hot shooters here would say something about those 2 different compensators though.

I doubt shooting a few lead bullets running @ .45 Colt velocities will completely lead up the comp. As for leading in general, the same criteria applies to the .460 as any other platform/caliber. Bullet fit and appropriate powders. My .460 is the PC Compensated Hunter and has only the one non-removable comp on it. I have in the past shot lead bullets @ .45 Colt velocities and saw no lead build up in it. I often wondered why the other X-Frames needed two different ones. I know of many that recommend GCs with lead, but it seems unless you check them yourself, for the price, you may as well buy jacketed. Jacketed is all I shoot outta my .460. It's accuracy with those amazes me every time I shoot it, and I shoot it often.

I guess with your screen name you have shot a few:)

The manual does not give any explanation of the 2 compensators. Just shows one for lead one for jacketed.

I found several threads here on them as someone was not sure which was which. The slightly different shaped holes I do not know why that would matter?

Yes I ordered some Jacketed bullets. I was thinking lead just so I can shoot it more. If/when I get the other "lead" comp as you say will just have to shoot it and see.

I shoot just about nothing but cast out of all my handguns because I can make them myself, jacketed bullets are too spendy now.
I get some loads that lead a little now and then, usually clean it up with some tweaking.
