Any way to SBR something you already own without the engraving?

I'd like an SBR Uzi. I'd like to buy the rifle now, and wait until the CLEO thing goes away to SBR it.

Can I do a form 4 and send it to someone else to modify it? Just don't really want my name engraved on the gun...

Manufacturing a SBR is done on a Form 1 not a 4. That's for a tax paid transfer. And yes you do have to engrave it. Hint: make your trust name short. You don't want to engrave "The William Richard Williams Family National Firearms Trust" on anything. :what:

I was wondering if I could not be the manufacturer. Form 4 is for purchasing an SBR right? I was wondering if I brought it to someone to have the barrel cut if I could use a form 4. Then I wouldn't be the manufacturer, they would.

If you brought me your gun and said "Make this an SBR" - I would engrave it with my name on a Form 2 and then sell it back to you on a Form 4.

Short answer...yes.

GoingQuiet explained the process. You can get a manufacturer to "shorten" your SA UZI (I will presume it will be semi-auto since the 'real' UZIs are already NFA.) and engrave his/her information on the gun. Then it transfers to you on a Form 4. Same kind of paperwork and waiting period as the Form 1, but it isn't your name on the receiver.

Whether the manufacturer actually cuts the barrel or you simply buy a short one makes no difference because you won't get the gun back until the manufacturer/dealer has the Form 4 back. So you could legally buy a short barrel and hang onto it until the SBR is in your hands. Then you could switch back to the longer barrel if you ever wanted/needed to.

Manufacturers generally charge a fee to 'make' the SBR for you. This covers their time, the engraving, use of their license and the paperwork hassle. Fair enough.

I like having a SOT do the paperwork and engraving, it takes the error on your part out of the equation. If you search for form 1 info on the internet you can find 5 different web sites that tell you 5 different things all together. Find a reputable manufacturer and have them the do the form 2 and form 4 for you, live with their engraver marking and be happy. Nothing would be worse than doing a form one and the guy you pay to have it engraved miss spells your name or town name.

"...Or create a trust with that name."

That's one of the most innovative ideas I've heard on this stuff in a while. Anyone actually done this?

You would STILL have to engrave "TRUST" on it and the city, state you live in. Won't really get you around the engraving requirement.

Question, could I have it engraved from the factory (AR-15 lower) with my trust's name on it, then apply and build at a later date?

Some of the AR lower receiver actual manufacturers will do that for you. There is a setup charge for the artwork, but then you can have them build as many of the lowers as you want with that design. On manufacturer that I deal with, it is also possible to have the lowers start with a particular pattern of serial numbers. You just have to ensure that you are dealing with the actual machine shop that manufactures the lowers, not the company that is reselling them. From what I've gathered, there are only a handfull of actual machine shops that are doing the manufacturing of all the lowers sold in the US. The one that I deal with got its start as a aerospace machine shop up in the Pacific Northwest... I suspect that turbine blades and such are a lot more critical on tolerances than lower receivers for ARs... :)
