I was smart and purchased a ruger charger the first time I saw one, should have bought two. want to pass one along to the kids/grandkids. (I'm keeping mine till I can't see anymore or they outlaw the 22lr cartridge altogether)

However, with the demise of the charger, and prices becoming astronomical for one - the logical next step becomes building your own.

I can find numerous places to purchase aftermarket 10/22 receivers, but I'm having a tougher time finding a place that I could order one registered as usable to make a charger. Do any of the aftermarket suppliers even make such a thing? I would think any company that makes the receivers would make a killing by also selling a receiver already registered as a SBR. despite the premium.

The SBR AR platform sure seems to be pretty hot anyway...

The other alternative is the form 1 and a tax stamp I guess and if that's the way it goes - then that is what happens.

Any idea of how long it takes to get that processed?

okay in digging around in the AR forums - I came across this reply from the atf...

the basic question is - if I purchase a new receiver from KIDD or similar - does it factor the same way???

Dear Mr. XXXXX:

This refers to your letter of October 1, 1992, in which you inquire
about the legality of manufacturing a handgun which utilizes a rifle
type receiver.

26 U.S.C. Chapter 53 # 5845(a)(4), the National Firearms Act (NFA),
defines the term "firearm" to include a weapon made from a rifle if
such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches
or a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length.

Utilizing the receiver of an existing rifle for the purposes of
manufacturing a handgun would constitute the making of a firearm as
defined above. Individuals desiring to make such a firearm must first
submit an ATF Form 1, Application To Make And Register a Firearm and
pay the applicable $200 making tax.

If an individual were to obtain a rifle type receiver that had not
previously been utilized in the assembly of a rifle, a handgun could be
made and not be subject to the provisions of the NFA. Verification
must be obtained from the manufacturer of the receiver to establish
its authenticity.

We trust the foregoing has been responsive to your inquiry. If we may
be of any further assistance, please contact us.

Sincerely your,
(signed)

You do not have to engrave, mark or do anything special to make a 10/22 type receiver into a pistol. As long as it is a virgin receiver i.e. never been made into a rifle when you buy it, you can make it into a pistol. Like an AR pistol receiver the FFL would simply list it as "other" on the 4473. That essentially verifies it as not being a rifle. Once built as a pistol you can make it into a rifle and back into a pistol. Of course you also have to follow the applicable laws concerning pistols in your state.

Also consider building one from an 80% receiver. There are also 10/22 type receivers being 3-D printed now.

If you buy a receiver, it is a receiver and can be made into rifle or handgun.

Again, receiver are not rifles or handguns, but just a "firearm".
A receiver cannot be "registered" as an SBR......because it isn't one....it's just a receiver. If you intend to make your own SBR from a particular receiver, you complete a Form 1 and pay the tax.

Only firearms in NFA configuration require registration under the NFA.

Form 1 (you make it) 4-8 months
Form 4 (transferred to you) 6-12 months

dprice3844444 if you can buy a new unassembled receiver from a manufacturer, have them engrave it as a pistol.
Engraving "Pistol" on a firerm receiver does nothing other than take $$$ out of your pocket.

Under Federal law, it is unnecessary, meaningless and serves no purpose. A firearm could have "machine gun" engraved on the receiver......that doesn't make it a machine gun.

Firearm receivers are recorded as "Other Firearms" on the 4473, meaning they are NOT Handguns or Long Guns........just "Firearms".
If a dealer receives a frame or receiver marked "Pistol"..........he records it as an "Other Firearm", not as "Handgun".

I'd be happy to get a blued steel receiver. I could customize it with a high gloss polish.
