i have not concealed carry at all at this time but probably will soon. i don't think i want to do inside the belt, it looks really uncomfortable. i've not paid a lot of attention to holsters, i would like to get one that works really well. looking for educated suggestions.

thank you!

Either you didn't state what mode of carry you are looking for (IWB or OWB), or I missed it, but I have a Ruger GP-100 with a 3" barrel that I carry IWB in a Tucker Holster very comfortably. The GP-100 and the 686 are very similar in size. Here is mine.

thunderbryd,
Actually, in my opinion, it is extremely comfortable with the right holster and correct type of belt to carry the load. There are several styles out there but the one I prefer is one like the one in the picture because it spreads out the load and wraps around the body. I don't care for the IWB holsters that have one wide or two loops on the holster itself. I wish I had a spare of the one in the picture I would send it to you to try. Believe me when I started carrying over 3 decades ago, I tried just about any IWB & OWB holster out there. The reason I choose this type of holster is because of its comfort. When I carry I want complete concealability of my forearm and the IWB holster does that perfectly. Good luck in your search.

Here's another vote for one of El Paso Saddlery's offerings. They're not cheap...but when I think of a truly fine piece of commercial leather work, they pop into view. Personally, I really like their "Austin" model...classy, with a Texas Ranger history...old school....a darned good wrapper for a good lookin Smith or Ruger. Best Regards, Rod......Here's one I made up for my 4" 686, inspired by the old Tom Threepersons design. El Paso offers it from 2" to 7-1/2"
