Surely we’ve all got at least one ugly rifle that just keeps hanging around. Maybe it’s a beater with a ton of sentimental value. Maybe it’s like mine and it’s a paint job gone horribly wrong. Maybe it’s some strange conglomeration of parts that just turned out to be fun. I’ll go first. My ugly rifle is a Seekins Precision SP223 that I dropped an 18” Dracos 6.5 Grendel barrel in a few years ago. The zombie green barrels were on sale for 50%, so I thought, why the heck not. After I got the barrel I decided the rifle needed some Cerakote to match the barrel, so I found a Multicam pattern online that incorporated some of that zombie green Cerakote. It actually looked really good. The pattern subdued the bright green to a degree that it was quite tolerable. I called up my Cerakote guy and asked if he could replicate the pattern and colors used. I actually gave him the color list. Long story short, what I ordered and what I received did not match up, but I’d been without the rifle for several months and I’m not really a complainer, so I just rolled with it. Problem is, I was so disappointed with the paint job, that the rifle just collected dust in the safe for a couple years and rarely saw the light of day. This year, I just decided to enjoy the danged thing for what it was and threw a thermal scope on it and decided to pig hunt with it and I’ll just be damned if it isn’t growing on me. Shoots lights out, and it’s a decent balance of weight and length. It’s still ugly, but I doubt I’ll ever get rid of it, or have it re-painted. 5F458734-F747-47B7-A444-C8D969D814BC.jpeg C4248593-012B-4BBD-8239-0F990AE9A3E7.jpeg

I like it! ......But then I like bright colors and dont like all black.

Ill grab a picture of my target gun in a bit, its pretty homely.......

It's not actually "ugly" to me, but I have an older sporterized '03 that would be considered heavy and frumpy for modern times.

It also sports a receiver sight, which suits me just fine.

I don't "love" the gun; it's more of a respect for an old war horse with a new purpose. I won't shoot anything beyond plain jane 150 grain in it, and I have advised my best friend to follow that recommendation just so that somebody in my camp knows. Save the 200 grain for something a little newer...

Anyway, it's a neat gun and a good value to me for what I got. My first .30-06 rifle.
I suppose that alone makes me like it better than average...

Ugly is subjective for sure, somewhere there is a person that thinks the Pontiac Aztec is a sharp looking vehicle.
I am so tired of black polymer that I'm seriously considering wrapping the furniture on my pump 12 ga in green plaid. Can wear striped pants with a polka dot shirt when I shoot it.

Everybody that owns a bullpup!! lol
Your AR is not ugly btw:)
I appreciate the kind words, but it’ll always be the “ugly gun” to me. I should have had he re-do it, but he’s a friend and he had a lot going on in life at the time. Didn’t really want to pile on. Biggest issue is the black was supposed to be Plum Brown and there should have been more “blending” throughout the pattern. That Plum Brown changed the whole look.

all mine are ugly all with plastic stocks or AR platforms, the only one I own that could fall into what I consider pretty rifle zone is my 1927 Savage 99 30-30 take down, but at 93 years old it's missing all of it's bluing and the wood has a lifetime of nicks and scars on it, its been in my family since the mid 40s and has killed a lot of deer and pig's over the years,as a matter of fact I loaned it out to my little brother yesterday for this deer season because he wanted to hunt with it again 20190419_181534.jpg 20190419_181554.jpg 20190419_181703.jpg 20190419_181713.jpg 20190419_181747.jpg 20190419_181805.jpg 20190419_181755.jpg

Nothing's better than a tool that is ugly from honest wear, it stands tribute to the trials and tribulations its user(s) have overcome.

My scrap bin gun. The lower is a Bushmaster blem, I got a smoking deal on. The barrel & gas system, handguard, receiver extension, buffer and recoil spring were all headed for a scrap bin and I saved them. The used handguard was camo (I dislike camo guns) and I spray painted it black and wrapped it in hockey stick tape. The stock was given to my by a generous THR member. The scope is a cheap Chinese no-brand 3-9x40 that I payed all of $15 for. The bolt carrier was used from another gun. The only new parts are the upper receiver, bolt and extractor, they are all proprietary as the rifle is chambered in 30 Remington AR and I managed to scored some old new-stock. The scope mount is probably worth more than the rest of the rifle being a Kinetic SIDELOCK but I got it free as a sample since it only had 1-inch rings. I had one magazine when I started (they are also proprietary) and I have found a few more for sale on various forums. I now have several 4rd magazines and two very rare 10 rd magazines. It looks better than it should given where most of the parts came from but its been a good rifle for me.

AP custom build from their monthly sales. AP upper/lower/handguard, Odin brake/extended mag release, SLR gas block, CBI barrel 6.5creed (22"/standard length gas system), Magpul matching stock/grip (from AP build), SI buffer tube nut/chargehandle/ambi safety, Phase5 ambi bolt release, Warne scope mount, Lucid6-24x50 and Geissele SSA-E (pretty sure it's a single stage, doesn't feel like 2-stage).

If the barrel was in black I think it would look better, but still very cool!

I kinda like it......what is it?
A very accurate pile of random used parts. Ill probably change the stock, but I do want to shoot it for a bit longer and see if the chassis grows on me.....It SHOULD not that different than the style of target stock I usually us....but well see. Ill also probably have to swap the barrels before too long, think ive got about 1200rnds on it, and im not sure how many the previous owner shot thru it.

70's M700 action, X-mark trigger (set at 1.5lbs), X-cal 6.5CM barrel, .250 Recoil lug, and ebay brake I bought for another project (perfect fit for .920 barrels and styled after the Vg6....works pretty well)

The bolt has an aluminum/steel firing pin and an increased power spring. The handle has been lopped off and a stud screwed in, to which i used one of the two handles i bought for my Ridgeline on.

Trybe defense chassis with an Ergo vertical grip. Its also had a bag rider, forend shroud, and cheek riser shroud bolted on to it.

No such thing as an ugly rifle. Ugly cars however are a different story. Ever seen a Ford Escort with a big spoiler?
