About to pull the trigger on one. Really interested to see if there is a good reason not to buy. I've read about the superiority of all things Colt, and I'm sure I'll get one soon. But for now, I'm really interested in the Ruger. This'll be my first 1911 purchase, so any and criticism and advice is welcome.

Thanks.

I say if you have your hands on one, don't let go until you have your wallet out! Almost two years after introduction and they're still as rare as hen's teeth around my parts.

That's the feeling I'm getting. Still looking for folks with some first hand experience.

That is the one I am waiting on myself. I feel for it the first time I saw one. I have been waiting to get my hands on one to call my own....I imagine I won't be picking one up till next spring sometime.

Great gun at an incredible price. :D

I do, with now three different pistols.

Pistol one didn't run well, got sold away.

The other two are shooters. My initial impression was that it was a novelty pistol that wasn't really in the league of other 1911s in its stable.

My impression now is that they can hang. They're accurate, and quite handsome. 33% of those I've shot sucked, but that leaves 67% that exemplified a great buy and a pistol to be happy with.

Shot one several times now as a range rental. I say for a mid-level (price-wise) 1911 that it's very difficult to beat in all aspects.

Everything I have read/heard is it's a definite strong buy. So if you're a big Ruger fan, I would go get it. If you're open to alternatives, there are some slightly less expensive 1911's (or at least in the same ballpark).

Thanks for the replies.

Nah, no body has one for rent. Matter of fact, no body has one with in 100 miles... at least in Louisiana. Played with one at a gun show a few months back. Really liked it, but they wanted top dollar. Just recently found one online for the best price I've seen in about 6 months (still more expensive than a year ago). I figure they'll probably just keep going up, at least for the foreseeable future.

I am a big Ruger revolver fan, and I've shot several of their pistols with no complaints. Just about everything you read on this 1911 is golden though, with the exception of a few lemons which Ruger tends to replace with a brand new rig. Plus the 100% made in America tag is a big attraction as well. Reckon, I oughta just go for it.

Here's the link by the way incase any of you can't resist.

As a disclaimer, I have no affiliation with this store. Have ordered from these guys before though and they are top notch. Called one time to see if a gun I wanted was in stock. Was told they'd just sold out. The gal that answered the phone call me back about an hour later saying they were able to locate one and could get it out to me right away. Arrived at my FFL 2 days later.

I'd say given the extreme scarce available of that model (really many popular models in the current "frenzy" we're once again witnessing) you made the right call. Consider yourself lucky and call it an 'early gift' from 'old St. Nick.'

I expect you have Academy's in Louisiana and they have them in the pipeline. The Local Academy (Temple, Texas) had one on hold and they checked the Killeen and Waco stores and each had one available. The one that was in Killeen is now in my desk drawer. The price was $699.00, a little high but cheaper than gas or FFL fees to find another.

Yeah I've checked Academy in Shreveport, Monroe, and Lake Charles, and called the other local gun shops along I-49 and I-20. They've all got a Taurus and an R1, but no SR1911. Atleast not in the last several months. The guy at the gun bar at Bass Pro actually laughed at me when I asked if they had one around. He said he's been looking for months with no luck.

One LGS had one on display for exactly 6 hours he told me when I walked in the following day to see if he'd have it available. They are a hot item apparently.

My FFL only charges 10 bucks and is only about about 5 min from my place, so that cost is minimal.

Too bad I can't buy handguns in Tx.

I bought one a month ago and I knew they were a good deal and kinda hard to find, but I didn't know they were THAT hard to find.

In my opinion, you can not get a nicer 1911 for the money, period.

The finish is excellent. I really love the matte silver finish on these. I used to have a stainless Springfield 1911A1 and the slide didn't look nearly as nice.

The gun is also great in that it comes with a really nice soft case and an 8 round mag, plus a seven rounder as well. 8 round mags are not cheap and the fact that the case is worth a darn is really quite a nice bonus once you buy the gun.

The ONLY thing that I can say negatively about this gun is that the trigger has just a little bit of play in it. It just feels a tad loose. Trigger pull itself is fine and the overtravel adjustment is another very welcome feature at this low price.

I'd say go ahead and get it when you can find one. The price on mine was $699 and was a bargain for the quality of pistol that I got.

I have had mine for about 4 months and I love it. Mine has not had any failures even using tula or wolf. One of my shooting buddies says its as good as his (higher end 1911). no brand wars :uhoh:

You wont find a better 1911 for the money.assuming you can find one :)

I am a fan :) I have not had a ton of experience with 1911's but find this one to function quite well and accurately!

I feel the SR1911 is an outstanding pistol especially at the price point. The trigger pull on mine was a bit heavy at 5.6#. I was thinking a C&S trigger kit but just replaced the sear spring with a Wilson Bulletproof to see where it would go. A couple tweaks and now it's 3.7# and sweet! Great fit and finish, accurate and eats anything I feed it. I paid for mine in advance to get 2nd on the list and waited 7 months and 17 days to get it. Well worth the wait.

The SR1911 was my first 1911 (and is still the only 1911 in my stable). It’s a fantastic gun, and by far my favorite impulse buy of all my guns. I went to the local shop to buy a Sig Mosquito for my girlfriend, saw the Ruger and thought, “I bet we could have more fun with THIS one!” It was a weak rationalization at the time, but the kicker was that she REALLY enjoys shooting it.

You probably won’t get match-grade accuracy out of it, but I have no problem shooting 2 inch groups at 20 yards. Again, not match-grade, but perfect for my home defense needs. I am not a marksman, and a quick search on YouTube will show you several videos of REAL marksman that show what the SR1911 can really do. This is my favorite.

While I might be a little Ruger-bias (I own quite a few), this gun has never let me down. Over the coarse of about 1000 rounds, I’ve had 1 or 2 stovepipes in the first 100 rounds, and that’s it. The gun comes with 2 magazines (pretty much unheard of with 1911’s). The only consistant problem I’ve had with the SR1911 is when I top-off the 8-round mag, it pushes the next round up too far after the 1st shot. I think the magazine springs is a little stronger than it needs to be. All the same, the gun functions perfectly without toping off the magazine. My favorite thing about it is that Ruger didn’t cater to California and their endless list of “needed” safety features. It’s like they were made before guns were blamed for shootings, and PEOPLE were responsible for their actions.

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!

I had an opportunity to compare a Ruger SR1911 and the Taurus PT1911, got to shoot about 100 rounds thru each. Based on looks, fit and finish the SR1911 would be my choice. Based on shooting, function and quality of trigger the Taurus PT1911 was a clear winner, for about $150 less. No reason to not buy the Ruger I liked it, but the trigger was average, with a 6lb pull, this could be very easily fixed. If you sit the fence too long, it will be gone. Back in April I had the new S&W Shield 9mm in my hand, they wanted msrp of $449 and I handed it back, changed my mind later in the day, went back and it was sold. Lucky for me Sportsman's Wharehouse got 2 two days later and I scored one for $399. Get it before it's back ordered, but the Taurus, with it's 3lb trigger was a better shooter right out of the box. I like working on 1911 triggers, of all my 1911 pistols the only one that is still untouched is my STI Custom Shop 9mm 1911. I usually use W.C. Wollf sear and main springs, with 19 lb main spring on my carry pistol and sometimes as low as 15lb on my competition / range pistols.

I bought one at Wholesale Sports about 6 weeks ago - paid $699. So far I have about 300 rounds through it without issues. With my handloads it will do around 3" at 25 yds. The trigger is ok. It has a slight creep, but I have no complaints about the weight which comes out at 3 3/4 lbs. I did replace the trigger with a short one because of my stubby fingers. The sights are good and the gun shot to point of aim at 7 yds. At 25 yds, it's right on for windage, but low. The slide fits the frame well and the barrel is snug in the bushing.

There are zero complaints from here. I my opinion, Ruger hit a homerun with this one.

Well, it's on the way. Thanks again for all the replies. I'll add my .02 after I pipe a few rounds.

Congrats! I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience. I'll be interested to hear what your groups are. Like I said above, my 15-20 yard groups are around 2 inches on a good day, and 2.5-3 the rest of the time.

I bought one last November. I picked out the tightest they had. It was about as tight as an Ed Brown, but not in the barrel lockup. I was able to push down on the barrel. It was not dehorned and the grip safety bit the web of my hand. It did not shoot 1" at 25 yards with any factory or handload. It did shoot 1" at 15 yards with one load, however. The rear sight is aesthetically unpleasant. The trigger pull was great, nice and crisp, but all the small parts are MIM. It galled despite having used copious amounts of Ruger rep recommended lube. I sold it and got all my money back, even sales tax and paperwork fees cuz it's a hot item. Overall, not impressed. A Colt Combat Elite, while costing 20% more, is a 100% better made gun.
