Anybody Have XM8 Update?

I would rather have the new H&K replacement piston upper for the M16

I would have to agree with MrMurphy on that one. It certainly doesn't show much confidence on the part of HK to be hedging their bets against the XM8's adoption.

Not to mention the Beta Mag the MG36 uses is reported to have had reliability problems with the M16 or M4 in Afghanistan, including one that went down and may have gotten a guy killed? The German Army just adopted H&K's MG43 as the MG4, very similar to our M249 to fill their own SAW role... the MG36 doesn't quite cut it compared to a real machinegun.

The military slings weapons when they need a hand. The only time I've ever seen carrying handles used was mass transport of rifles (took 12 M16s myself at once this way, three in each hand and the rest slung back or front) in basic, but I could have slung all of them just as easy. And with the new tactical slings, the carrying handle has basically no use for a rifle.

Machinegun, yes, rifle, no. That's why the Marines went to the A4. They want optics, and the carrying handle is so rarely used it's not even funny. I've known enough infantrymen to know.

As many of you that have read previous posts I’m a strong proponent of the M-16A1 shooting M-193 ball ammunition.

But all good things must come to an end and with a new rifle being tested won’t you think with our current technology scientists could come up with a new round (heavier bullet 80-100 grains and high muzzle velocity 3500 fps) in the same size package as the 5.56 round.

Concerning HP ammo let me say this if you've seen what what M-193 ball does you wouldn't be worrying about HP ammo.

I've used the carrying handle on a 16 usally around the NDP, firebases etc. when in the bush most of guys in my unit used a sling through the front sight or aournd the back of the handguard to the stock with your hand on the grip with the muzzle pointed down.

Have a good day and remember to pray for our troops around the world.

Saturday I was in communication with my congressman... he said the MX-8 will go into full production in 2005.
Get ready to delete the X from the name.

Now if we can just get a civilian version with only an internal mechanism change... that would be swell.
I remember the civilian tavor rifle and it looked like shiat.

Greetings,

I think a switch in rifles is inevitable. One thing I just don't understand though. It seems that there is a shift to shorter barrels for the assault rifles. I can understand the need for more compact firearms, but my understanding of the 5.56mm round is that even out of a 20" barrel using either the 55grn or 62grn round, your only getting about 200 yards worth of bullet fragmenting range. Then using the 14.5" barrel reduces that range to somewhere between 125 and 150 yards. If I were a trooper, I would not want that stopping power limitation. I would much rather have a longer barrel and longer distance for maximum bullet effectiveness. Yes, I understand the majority of encounters is somewhere around 100 yards, but I have to believe there plenty of times where some reach would be advantageous, even necessary.

They are also working on the 6.8MM and that project seems to be moving forward. If luck is with us, when the M-8 starts getting issued, it will be in 6.8MM

Moving forward? Remington has put the round in production, and Barrett already makes a 6.8mm AR upper or rifle. And you know they're not going to be alone for long.

PS you notice the XM8 guys has an M4 backup just in case! And why isn't the XM8 loaded!

There's a guy on Lightfighter forum who goes by RgrGordo, who seems to be a military guy who is on HK's XM8 development and testing team. Apparently, he is in a position to give firsthand information, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he is of truthful character. He seems like a straight-shooter to me.

He says there is no problem with the XM8's polymer receiver melting, even when he got the barrel "white hot."

He says the XM8 automatic rifle version (with the Beta-C-style magazines) is NOT intended to replace a belt-fed SAW, but that they both have a place in current tactics.

He says that Aberdeen Proving Ground doesn't want him to release it's testing data, but he will say that the XM8 has an 80% better Mean Failure Rate than the M16 series. If I knew what the MFR of the M16 series actually was, that number would mean more to me!

There does get to be a point of diminishing returns, whtn talking about reliability, though.
Only when it reaches 100%.

Anyone notice on HKPRO, that the new version of the G36 has features (bolt/mag release/buttstock) developed in the XM8 project?

That sounds reasonable. The British Army have kept their L86A2 LSW in service to deliver precision fire out to 600m alongside the FN Minimi, which has been adopted in order to provide high-volume fire out to 300m.
